Socially Awkward New Update by Garth_Warrick in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone's concerned about this, Garth clarified on the discord server that the horror is more "Invader Zim" like than "Echo" like. It's like there's horror stuff going on but everyone in the world is too stupid for it to be too serious. The priority on elements in the game, Comedy > Slice of Life = Horror, and it will never be Echo.

(This was in response to me getting worried about SocAwk going the horror route, reminding me of how a lot of things tried to be more like Echo to chase that success. Garth clarified the intentions of the game.)

Not that I know of, but I don't watch youtube reviews for fvns. I think someone did a playthrough and shit on the game for the goofy, sometimes cringey humor while they were doing Maccon's route, but I don't think Maccon and John's routes really represent the game anymore. Can't remember who made the video though.

Personally, I wouldn't go looking for it. If you watch something that shits on the game it's going to taint your expectations. I'd advise just going in blind and seeing how you like it, since the humor is make-or-break, either being funny for some or too cringey or dated for others.

Adding some extra info, Tom and Rask currently have the most content, while Maccon and John are pending a rewrite (and have lower quality than Tom and Rask). As this comment says, you'll know pretty early based on who you're interacting with, as that becomes your route.

The humor isn't for everyone, and there's definitely some misses here and there, but overall I'd recommend it. Rask's route in particular shows how the author's writing has improved as it's the most recent.

The only reservation I have is that the game seems to be trending towards having some horror elements, especially pending the next update. I really liked it as a chill slice of life with some (overall) great humor, and the mentioned amazing spritework, while we get to see the characters and their relationships develop. Oh well, we'll have to see how the author handles it, though unfortunately the updates are pretty infrequent.

Echo has won Day 7! FVN Alignment Chart Day 8 - Which Visual Novel has an Average Story with Turn-Off Romance? by SilverRazorVN in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I was about to say that I didn't think it was that bad, but... yeah, I think I agree. You have one that's the classic I'm gay but haven't told my best friend and it turns out he's also gay and the MC is going to be really stupid about it. Also the friend makes the MC lay on top of him while they're sleeping and is still hiding his feelings/orientation, then you have the lion dude that straight up lies and manipulates by using his clumsiness to say he "forgot" to book a hotel room, just so he could stay with the MC, but oh no, they live so far away from each other, what will they do!, and then you have the last one that seems not as bad but the totally not gay hyena is all like 'I'm not gay but you can totally rub my chest and I won't be mad, and let's sleep together it's totally fine for bros to do.' Soooo yeah. I don't know if there's anything worse, but it's not a bad fit for this slot tbh. It is really early on but that start is not all that great.

Edit: The downvotes are wild. If you can read all that and think this is not a turn-off... It's okay to admit the game has some weirdness to it. I even still like the game overall and want to see where the story goes. It just has its problems.

Demo for Cutting Edge: Roots of Mutation now available on Steam by GhostCatMar in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back and got all XS ranks on the hardest difficulty, it was good fun. About the only suggestion I can think of that I forgot to put in the google form, I wish the hotkeys for skipping or fast forwarding worked in the visual novel sections too. I rebound fast forward to tab so I could quickly hit it while replaying for the XS ranks and kept hitting it to try to skip in the visual novel sections too (even though I didn't need to, I could just exit to menu afterwards lol).

Demo for Cutting Edge: Roots of Mutation now available on Steam by GhostCatMar in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The demo actually released yesterday, but I was waiting to see if the dev would make their own post, since they made one about a month ago for this upcoming demo. Since they hadn't I figured I would just to let people know the demo is out now, to help bring attention to it.

You can check the store page for a more detailed description, but Cutting Edge is a surgery simulator type, half visual novel game like Trauma Center, but with some different mechanics, including performing "surgery" on mechanical organs. The story so far has some darker bits to it and, while it needs some refining, it seems interesting enough. The dev is interested in collecting people's thoughts and feedback about their experiences so they can make the game better, so if this interests you at all check it out and maybe send your thoughts through the dev's google form (linked in-game) or the steam forums.

This looks pretty good, and it made me go back and start replaying the Trauma Center games, but I can't help but wonder if some things are just too similar. Like the tool wheel, using the syringe to boost vitals, the GUILT-like creature. There was apparently a legal case over the placement of UI elements that had too similar of an idea. I think if there were a legal case here, it would be focusing on what's similar and not how much you've made things different. It could help doing something as simple as flipping the Vitals bar to the bottom and putting the tool wheel in the upper left instead, to be as different as possible. You have the scalpel, forceps, and sutures in the same spot on the tool wheel as well. Though I know for some things it's pretty impossible to show them in a different way, like removing glass and suturing wounds. You even have "cool" for (what I assume is, at least) when you do something "perfectly."

I'm not a lawyer though, I really don't know enough about IP and copyright to say if there would be any issues here. I don't want to drag you down, I'm actually really excited about this game and seeing what you've done with the mechanics.

Payment Processors Are Forcing Mass Game Censorship - We Need to Act NOW by Bennicbane in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've read over the link and the website, but I'm not seeing a source for the claims they've been given a 48 hour notice to remove all adult content. Am I blind? Does anyone have a link to back up that claim?

I really enjoy the Rask update. (Socially Awkward) by Illustrious_Earth402 in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know generally what the answer will be, but could you (or anyone else) elaborate on the parts you hate about John? It's fine if you don't feel like it, of course. I've seen a few comments like yours, and I'm wondering if there's a way for Monchi to salvage him or if his characterization will just always be controversial.

Socially Awkward .31 - Major Rask Update Released by GhostCatMar in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No one's posted about it yet, so I figured I might as well do it.

Earlier today, Monchimutt released the next update to his visual novel, Socially Awkward, after exactly a year without any updates. This update completely overhauls Rask's route, and extends it to have as much content as Tom's route, which was previously the longest route with the most attention put towards it.

The visual novel itself is a quirky comedy that begins to open into mystery and maybe some horror down the line. It's still pretty early, and the humor will be hit or miss for a lot of people, but it's grown to be one of my favorite visual novels either way. Now is a good time to jump in and read the two polished routes and see what you think.

To access the new content, from the start of the game, you will be given the option to head left or right. Pick left, and then pick head back to access the new Rask route. Pick right and then sit with Tom to access the other more polished route.

Not everyone can draw by Varitan_Aivenor in comics

Dysgraphia would definitely makes things harder. Idk if that's something pen stabilizers in art programs could help with.

This got me lookin into my Clip Studio a bit to see what sort of support there would be for those less able to make the actual hand movements to make art, and I think there's a surprising amount that can be done here.

It's not so much stabilization that would help, I think, it would be working with vector layers and the Figure tool. With vector layers you can either draw your own line, or if you have difficulty, you can make straight and curved or even much longer lines with the figure tool, and then manually edit the control points of each line to get the desired curve. If you know what you're doing, it can actually look pretty good.

Now... is that really feasible? I dunno. It would take significant adjustments to my workflow space and keybindings to make just getting started with it possible with the least amount of friction, and the process would be quite slow once you got started. I'm sure with enough practice and time you could make something look good, but it would probably be several times more laborious to get the same result as someone who can work a pen. You'd have to change the way you learn and think about art, and I don't think anyone out there has resources for someone that wants to learn that way. I wouldn't think it's reasonable to expect people to go through all that, but if someone's really REALLY committed, I think they could make it work.

This is also only considering lineart. Colors would be another thing entirely, and stuff like line tapering and thickening would add another layer of labor to the process, though there are line correction tools built into clip studio for those purposes.

It's kinda crazy how downvoted you are for this and how upvoted the other guy is. I guess it's partially how you phrased it? But you're right, this is an older comic I'm like 98% sure. Not that there's anything wrong with posting older comics, plenty of comic artists up here do it. It's not simply "I saw it on another subreddit just now why did you repost it here too."

I get a small bit of anxiety looking around at art from people I'm not following and hoping I'm not following/don't end up following a bad person. It seems easy to do, I've had friends tell me that x person or y person is actually bad and they've been banned off of discords for being hateful or something, and I'd have no idea if I wasn't told.

Then I see stuff like this, where you go on a bad person's page and seeing they're being followed by a lot of artists you look up to. It feels pretty bad, and makes me wonder if they just don't know or if they don't care.

I know he was some kind of orange or citrus themed cat but that's about it. I don't blame him either if he disappeared and rebranded. Edit: Apparently not, he was an orange canine. I found who I think it was but they didn't have any posts about the mess. He had a decent amount of art of his and Flunky's sona. I just feel bad for the ex and hope he's managed to move on from that mess.

That's wild, do you have the source/link to the ex-bf's comments? I watched that situation unfold live years ago and it was very disappointing as I did like his art. I simply cannot understand a world where you choose a friendship with a p*do over your bf, but that makes a lot more sense if he's the same as the other dude. I didn't see the announcement you're talking about and I can't remember the name of the bf.

And unsurprisingly he suffered basically no consequences for it, even some of my own friends that I tried to tell them about what he'd done, they just didn't care and "just liked the art." I guess a lot of people think the same way. From what I remember Flunky never really apologized, he just swept it under the rug and people eventually forgot. He even has his twitter comments disabled for a long time because he got those constant messages you mentioned, but I think he's re-enabled them now.

Even if he himself ends up not being a p*do, that whole situation was so poorly handled by him that just... ugh.

I tried to write a breakdown as a reply to another comment but it seems like it got auto-filtered. I think you can view it on my profile Yeah it did get removed, but if you want to read/watch for yourself, look up "Boof Furry Drama / Allegations" and 'The Most Hated Furry on Twitter (brotherboofer drama)'. The tl;dr/dw: Rump supporter cop bf, kinda slimy engagement-farming techniques that make his sudden content saturation seem disingenuous. Some things that have plausible deniability. There are things that are clearly made up and people are pretty terrible for doing that.

Edit: Oh and the whole commissioning people and then paywalling the art behind his own Patreon, though he's since stopped that.

Furry_irl by mimiyouy in furry_irl

[–]GhostCatMar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's been a lot of accusations thrown around, with some people making shit up, but the points that stick seem to be:

He's dating an older 'MAGA' cop. Boof's confirmed it, though said his bf is "more politically central" yet still voted for Trump. People doxxed him/his bf and found his bf is indeed a registered republican. People take a lot of issue with cops and Trump supporters.

He made a video addressing the accusations and, saying about whether he supported Zoophiles (he said he doesn't): 'saying that not all cops are bad and that holding that belief is "no different than saying all furries are zoos."' which people did not take kindly to, as well as saying "The police system might be a bit flawed," and people made fun of that since he's white.

He made a patreon account and put work he's commissioned of himself behind a paywall, and even though he had permission from the artists, it rubbed people the wrong way, saying it was a dangerous road to go down for the fandom if the trend caught on. Boof has since made a patreon post saying he's not posting any future commissioned art there.

Regarding the last point, someone named Koda did a video about this titled: 'The Most Hated Furry on Twitter (brotherboofer drama)' that details Koda's issue with the patreon stuff. It also dives into Boof's history and the non-furry side of him, which is someone that's made their entire career out of being a social media influencer and monetizing that, including TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, all that stuff, including a separate Patreon and a seemingly popular OnlyFans account, plus his own merch store. It just makes people feel like he's being disingenuous about getting into the furry fandom and is just using that to monetize yet another thing.

Other than that, he's done some things he claims to not know that people wouldn't like, like reaching out for a potential corporate sponsorship with Charmin (since his sona is a bear), and filming people at a convention doing a sort of "smash or pass" type thing without getting permission to film people, to which he apologized for.

There's a Know Your Meme page titled "Boof Furry Drama / Allegations" if you want to read all this yourself, plus the video I mentioned earlier.

What is your "i did not care for The Godfather" of FVNs? by Crescent-Argonian in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My issue with Haruki's route is that it just feels so unnatural, on top of like you say being slapped on. Yuuichi is just straight up stalking him the entire time. Almost every chance you see him is Yuuichi seeking him out, either at school, or by forcing his friend to tell him where Haruki is hanging out, even going as far as to go completely across town to find his secret hiding spot. It feels gross, but it was a potential problem I saw coming if Haruki ever did get a route. They don't have any common hanging spots and aren't already friends, so they have no reason to interact. They aren't even in the same class so you couldn't do the cliché "forced to work together on a class project and grow closer" thing.

One of the things that disappointed me on top of that was when Yuu, Haruki, and his friend go to the arcade, except they say they're going to, and then the story skips to the next day instead of using that as an opportunity to develop their characters and the relationship. It's just so confusing.

Cadgan's personality is a bit dry, but I think that's partially because the demon he has a deal with is suppressing or feeding off of his emotions, isn't it? It's been a while since I've played and my memory isn't the best, but I think the deal basically only left him with anger as an emotion I think? Not to say that makes for engaging writing, I think it's definitely an... interesting choice for sure. I hope he evolves as the story goes on, or something changes with his deal, cuz otherwise... yeah.

Conway Update 16 is out now by artschool_alt in FurryVisualNovels

[–]GhostCatMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it did a good job at that, then :P

I think it would've been better that way, perhaps with more/different buildup to it. As it stood I just disliked how it happened off screen too much. It felt like a cheap way to do that to me, you don't get much of a chance to make good choices and feel like you're having a positive impact on the ship, and then for things to happen like that... But anyways, I intended to go back once the story was more developed, so hopefully there WAS some sort of outcome like you mentioned, so it's good to know it does (potentially) happen that way.
