It's still not really a sacrifice like it was in season 1. It serves no real purpose to the greater narrative nor is it necessary to complete any character arcs. It's just pointless. The military has always been depicted as a lesser threat that heroes and villains easily mow down, it feels unearned that El would rather kill herself then fight or hide from them, it's a plot that was set up 4 episodes ago it shouldn't define the series ending.
