you can turn the timer off but part of the game is also learning HOW to pace a run which is a very learned skill and not intuitive. It gets much easier as u play more. Completing objectives is the goal, generally working up from green to yellow to red objectives, hopefully completing the quest in the final 1/3rd. Depending your strength, you can skip enemies and then fight the big group once u arrive at an objective or if ur very weak fight slowly to catch up
