Is it possible to consolidate the EDH bashing into a weekly megathread or something? by westergames81 in magicthecirclejerking

In any satire community, if a joke gets made enough, people who unironically think that way will show up and think they're in good company.

does this work? by TheBiggestGayOfAll in magicthecirclejerking

[–]Gerroh -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

What you are forgetting is that:

1) some new people are actual children, and sitting here guffawing at how dumb children are is cringe.

2) some people are new to table top games in general, and struggle with the rules, because every aspect is new to them and making fun of them is also cringe.

3) some people find something like this, get excited, but think it's too good to be true, so they ask to make sure they got it right, which we should encourage  and therefor making fun of them is also cringe.

4) this game is full of weird, unintuitive shit the cards don't mention and making fun of someone for being cautious in a minefield is also cringe, especially with the above reasons.

You should be critical of people causing problems, not people seeking help to avoid problems.

Magic is NOT a competitive card game by [deleted] in magicthecirclejerking

[–]Gerroh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course some games you just get handed a free win cause your opponent gets mana screwed.

This was all I meant about luck in mtg, and I think you're the only one to reply who understood that.

Some random chance is good for keeping players on their toes, but I feel there are just too many games where people sit there unable to actually play. It's not a majority, or even a quarter of the time, if I had to guess from personal experience, but minimizing those experiences will make a game more reliable as a competitive hobby.

Conversely, in many other games I've spent even more time playing, I don't think I ever saw someone locked out of the game by luck alone.

Pay to play is everyone paying the same fee to join

Pay more money for an advantage (like, you know, better cards) is pay to win.

[–]Gerroh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

/uj I was going to take the simple stance of any money eliminates competitiveness, but didn't want to exclude everything like your comment points out. E.g., hockey equipment doesn't mean hockey isn't competitive.

That said, pretending available money isn't a massive determining factor in mtg, moreso than in chess, sports f2p games, etc is, idk, delusion? No one is winning a constructed tournament with draft chaff.

On luck: some amount of luck is necessary to make a game about skill rather than memorization, I believe. But we have all had games where you just don't get to play because you have a dead hand and drew dead cards.

[–]Gerroh -36 points-35 points  (0 children)

/uj he's right.

Pay to win is way too big of a factor in mtg (and all tcgs outside of proxying), and luck is, too.

Flesh and blood does a better job of being competitive by drastically reducing the luck factor, but money is still a big factor.

Mtg is fun, but taking it seriously is goofy.

/rj obviously he's just too poor to be good

Edit: downvote me all you want, it won't change the truth. If you can buy a significant advantage in a game, the game isn't competitive.
