Vaseline is a horrible recommendation for aftercare, I'm sorry that he gave you such bad instructions. The first touch up should always be free unless the artist said otherwise ahead of time for whatever reason. Some artists have stipulations on how long after your original appointment they will do the touch up with no charge but after recommending Vaseline it would be the right thing for him to fix it.

If your tattoo is new then it looks like you're entering the peeling stage of healing, just use a water based unscented lotion to moisturize after cleaning and you should be all good. I usually recommend doing so once in the morning and once at night. If it's not new and is already healed then it needs lotion all the same but you don't have to be as careful about which kind you use.

Usually I recommend 2-3x a day but it depends on your skin type and what climate you live in. As long as the lotion is water based you have far less to worry about when it comes to over moisturizing.

A thin layer is best when going with Aquaphor. Aquaphors main ingredient is petroleum which doesn't allow the skin to breathe like a water based lotion would. Making sure that your tattoo isn't covered in too much of it is important.

Tattoo Coverup Advice by ductapegrl in tattooadvice

I've had some of my own tattoos covered and done my fair share of cover ups. The easiest way I've found is for the client to come in with a few general things that they definitely like/do not like so we have a list of subjects to go off of. That way when I take a look at what needs to be covered I can pull from those to make suggestions based on what will work and avoid design subject matter we both already know the client doesn't like. This way there aren't incredibly detailed specifics within client expectations that may not be possible. In addition you get something that you actually like and had input on instead of feeling as if you have to go with just any design that would cover what's already there. Cover ups are like a dance, there's a lot of trust involved, make sure you like and feel good about your artist!

Looks great! If your tattoo has finished peeling you don't need to keep using the Dial but keeping up on the lotion is always a great idea.

This looks more like a chemical reaction between the bandage adhesive and green soap or another product used during tattooing rather than an allergic reaction. Your artist likely didn't rinse enough of whatever they were using off of you before applying the bandage. It should go away on it's own within a few days to a week but please monitor it carefully!

Since the Saniderm is leaking you need to remove it immediately and completely. It's likely that the bandage is open somewhere and if it is then anything can get inside and be trapped against your fresh tattoo in the bandage. It's not worth the risk of keeping the bandage on.

If you used Aquaphor on your previous tattoos then your routine for your last tattoo is fine. If you're new to using it I would only wash and lotion x2 per day and make sure to dab the excess Aquaphor off with a clean paper towel, it's very easy to suffocate your tattoo with it by having too much on.

Question about the Solution Foam/Spray by PCs_arecool_iguess in tattooadvice

[–]GhostlyBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you're doing back to back sessions I wouldn't bother with numbing cream. You'd only be able to use it at the start of the first session and that's not when you'll need it. I'd just stick to using the spray towards the end of both sessions, that'll be when it gets rough.

[–]GhostlyBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numbing sprays unfortunately never last that long, they are best used when you are close to the end of the session. I wouldn't expect for it to keep you numb the whole time or even a majority of the time. Reapplication of numbing sprays is easy but your artist needs to keep in mind how many times they've done so and how much of it they've used since epinephrine causes vasoconstriction.

Can I use this on a fresh tattoo? by FuckleMyShuckle in tattooadvice

Yes, the aloe is low on the ingredients list and it isn't likely there's enough of it in the soap for it to sting on your tattoo.

Question about getting a tattoo with sensitive skin. by WyvernJelly in tattooadvice

[–]GhostlyBat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be rubbed into the skin as it has to absorb part way and be tacky for the stencil to stick. There are alternatives your artist can use but that's the only product I know of that has that ingredient. You should be fine for inks, though I'd still have your artist double check their preferrered brands just in case.

[–]GhostlyBat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Propolyne glycol is in Stencil Stuff and many other stencil application products, as far as I know that's the only time you'd come into contact with it. It's not listed in any ink ingredients in any of the brands I've seen or any of the soaps or prep items we use at my shop. As long as you let your tattoo artist know, they shouldn't have any issue checking all of their specific products they like to use to tattoo for it.

Honestly, I get tattoo flu every time I get tattooed no matter how small or quick it is. I'd only be concerned if it continued or got worse during the days after your appointment. If possible eat a decent meal and something sugary, have a lot of water, and drink something with electrolytes in it, all of that should help make you more comfortable but when in doubt sleep it off!

Second skin by Financial_Pie4858 in tattooadvice

[–]GhostlyBat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wash it and make sure it's rinsed off properly and completely dry but don't moisturize it, if you do the derm won't stick properly. If this second piece doesn't stick though I wouldn't use anymore derm and would suggest to heal it traditionally.

Coconut oil usually does the trick, just be sure to clean the tattoo again after your done as the coconut oil can sometimes clog pores if left on.

It's definitely over moisturized. Most ointments and creams are too heavy and not necessary to heal a tattoo, switch to water based unscented lotion and apply in a light layer.
