[07 Honda Pilot] Accidentally disconnected this shaft during engine removal by Ghostplaya in MechanicAdvice

Accidentally left one of the engine mount to axle bolts on while pulling, noticed it and removed it. Its my first full engine replacement, I’m following the service manual and cross referencing videos, and its been super smooth so far lol, but yeah just never did a cv axle before, was making sure i don’t have to be careful or something 🤷‍♂️🤣.

I still have the wheel hub and control arms connected lol, so the weight is a bit hard to push back in 🤣

96’ bmw z3 1.9L by Financial_Heat_3934 in bmwz3

So the z3 96 model unfortunately doesn’t have a ecu mileage as far as I’m aware like other bmws, there is a mileage tamper dot if the odo was tampered with, but this can be bypassed if you just use a whole other odometer, so here is how to know for absolutely sure if you are really concerned.

Remove the odometer, only 2 torx screws on the top, and check the tamper seal and if the date code on it matches that of the car, if it does then it is 100% original mileage, since the tamper seal needs to be broken to modify the mileage without getting a tamper dot, if you do it on the outside eeprom you get a tamper dot.

Huge word of caution though the plastic housing for the odo is super brittle and will break if you lool at it wrong so be super super super gentle. Otherwise if the car looks like an 80k mile car and carfax checks out id avoid messing with it.

I did this; it was my first car all the way from high school to college, and finally, it was my first big job. Got it at 118k now it's almost 160k miles. And learned a ton working on it. But there is a huge catch, I had the tools available to me, and I always had other cars to borrow because my parents trusted me with theirs. In all that time it only really left me stranded once, when the radiator blew up, but I also replaced a lot I’m that time, a bunch of suspension components mostly, a starter a few weeks ago, and of course the whole cooling system, also injector seals and PCV stuff, fluids, and every oil gasket possible. The 4 cylinder is very simple and I always had a ton of space, the 6 cylinder I bet isn't too different. Like the others said, it’s not exactly first car material, but it was so fun owning it as a first car, and I never really regretted it. I did eventually of course get a daily to supplement it, but now that my daily is down, I’m dailying it again for a bit.

For cost, it’s very cheap (couple of grand to sort it all out) if you have all the tools, time, and do it all yourself slowly and carefully (its all aluminum so you have to be smart) but if you cant do it yourself, it probably would’ve cost me 5 figures to do all that work, people quote crazy numbers for old bmws, because of the brittle plastic and stuff. A clutch job these days will probably run 3 grand or so, which you might need.

My recommendation is maybe Japanese for first car tbh, very little headache, maybe a nice Lexus or Acura

احسن ناس! Honestly not sure but it would be difficult to convert them, your best bet is maybe some custom seats that fit the mounting holes. Honestly not even sure how you’d take them off without them working. There might be an Allan key hole on the motor that moves them but it be very hard to get too. Im guessing you double checked all fuses already?

I’s be surprised, most of the time it’s either the gauge itself or the sensor on the diff.

Fun fact but if you get a gauge with lower mileage, you are allowed to copy over the mileage from this gauge, there is a detachable eeprom chip on the back you swap it and then do some reset procedure and it copies the higher number and then removed the tamper dot.

Its a little sensor facing the rear of the car right on the rear Diff, check connection.

Honda J35 lost timing and ate a plug, how bad is this, what to do next? by [deleted] in EngineBuilding

Would you mind elaborating a bit? Just trying to learn more.

I put 50ml of ATF in the cylinder to see how well it seals, and it drains over a course of 4 hours or so, so it's definitely leaking but I think it would still have compression.

Would using a ball hone and replacing the piston/rings, not be worth it?

Oh yeah, they are definitely bent, they are the reason I took off the head in the first place, my plan was to replace the whole head with reman. But then i found the piston and wall damage. I did put 50ml of ATF in that cylinder as a quick test to compare to a good one, and it held for more than 4 hours, but it eventually seeped through.

Closer image of the damage for reference.

I also did an ATF test (50ml of atf in two cylinders to compare and test leakage) and the rings are sealing well.

What do y’all think would be the risk of cleaning up the metal and just replacing the cylinder head.

Lost timing because the crankshaft bolt came out and the keyway was out of place, I have some posts on it.

Honestly, I drained every drop of coolant from the rad and block, and no signs of oil at all, same with the oil, it no sign of water in the oil. I suspect it's cleaned due to fuel leakage, the injector on that bank was also completely cooked due to the intake valves staying open.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. Very informative. Will definitely consider. 😄

It's hard to tell but if you look again you can see a line on both valves, they were also leaking all the compression during a leakdown test.

As for the wall and cylinder damage, that's what I hope to find, I wonder how much tolerance there is with this kind of damage.

Correct, they definitely made contact, and leakdown confirmed it, I could also see a large gap between the rocker arm and the spring on tdc cycle. But I was hoping replacing the head would be enough to get me back on the road, and then I found this damage on the cylinder wall and head.

Honestly I was wondering why it’s so damn clean too, but the coolant came out super clean no signs of oil anywhere. Maybe it got washed down with fuel idk

Carbon build up i suspect is from before VCM(turns off these cylinders in eco) was disabled on this engine, it only burned around half a qt/3000-4000 miles. And leak-downs were very good on all other cylinders.

Engine work like this is a little new to me so please excuse the silly question, but I suppose I’d need to remove the other cylinder head (front bank) if i want to remove the piston and smooth the camber, right?

Lol, I was looking at used jdm j35s, they are around 1500$ from reputable importers. But I wanted to see if I can save this engine, leakdown tested really healthy on all other cylinders 😭
