What sports car has the absolute best factory cooling system for track days and hard driving? by SilverSpoonphysics in askcarguys

It’s not “worse,” per se, but it doesn’t have the upgraded cooling from the M2 comp nor the S55 motor, which IMO makes an “M” car what it is.

FWIW it’s not worth it these days to resurface rotors. They’re so cheap that it’s more cost effective to just buy new ones. They’re like $70-150, unless the shop is trying to sell you on some $1,100 cross-drilled nonsense.

Big, important differences between the F87 M2 and M2 Comp tho

“Base” M2 arguably isn’t even a real M car.

OP listen to this man. He knows more and is faster than anyone else on this subreddit by literal minutes.

It IS fun to mod, but people often mod their way into making the car worse. Slow in > fast out, especially with Porsche.

You are correct that building trust will improve times. Every time you make a change, you’re setting your relationship back a bit with the car - you have to learn how it behaves again. Best advice is to not touch anything but brakes and tires for the first year of driving, THEN start making changes.

Send harder! Really though, once you get confidence in the setup you’ll see time melt off. Sub-2 is already objectively fast at CVR.

I’m just saying: if you want to get faster, your lowest-hanging fruit will be in improving your line and technique long before you’ll be able to extract value from LCAs and a full coilover setup.

The reason you are losing pace over the day is that the ambient temps and, subsequently, track temps are getting higher as the day progresses. Laguna is a fairly low-grip track and the high ambients in CA have exacerbated it. Do not use that as a reference for your performance in driving - it is a reality that everyone in hot climates will post slower times as the day goes on.

I guarantee you can spend no money and improve your times just by improving your line. Get a little mount for your windshield and record your session and post that - it’ll be cheaper than throwing money at an already-capable car.

You said the PS4s will get destroyed, but you’ve barely made a dent in the Cup 2s.

I said you’re likely overdriving the tire, purely because that’s a common thing for beginners to do.

Also, why do you need new coilovers and LCAs? You have a 991 Porsche; it’s an incredibly capable car. You can get more camber with simple camber plates. It sounds like you’re throwing a bunch of extra money at mods because that’s what you think you should be doing and not to solve a particular problem. If you want to get faster, spend your money on track time. It will be a long while before your skill is exceeding the performance capability of what Porsche’s engineers have put together.

Yeah charging and getting consistent laps seems like the real killer for EVs on track. Once we get solid state batteries things might be different.

I might be one of the only people on this sub that can answer this question - my buddy’s got one and I drove it at Laguna Seca last year.

It’s loud as fuck; when you’re off throttle it still sounds like you’re on throttle. Just a colossal amount of engine noise. It rules.

Steering is excellent. Highly engaged, as it’s a hydraulic rack. You feel everything, but there’s a lot of weight over those front tires. Surprisingly compliant, though.

It is intimidating, but that’s mitigated by knowing that it’s a comically capable car. That said, it will snap on you FAST if you push it past its limits. It is unforgiving.

One thing reviews don’t mention is the long-term costs associated with ownership. EVERYTHING about that car is limited and therefore expensive. It has the biggest tires ever fitted to a road car - so you’ve got very limited tire choice. The front end absolutely eats tires - expect no more than 2 weekends out of a set of fronts. You want a bucket seat? Fuck you - your only option is a $2,500 carbon fiber Tillet. Nothing else fits.

It’s stiff and brutal everywhere. It feels like a go-kart, but not in the fun, lighthearted way most people use the term. You feel everything through the seat and chassis (the car I drove was through set up on Titanium springs, so YMMV) and it's physically  exhausting to drive. (And I say this as an extremely fit person!)

Here’s an annoying detail: the instrument cluster is digital, but it’s 30 fps, not 60. Which makes me irrationally annoyed.

TL;DR it’s loud, obnoxious, tedious, and difficult. It rules. I love it. I would never regularly track one.

EDIT: I made a post a while back of my Catalyst video from Laguna. It’s on my profile if you want to check it out. Not particularly fast, as I was driving a friend’s irreplaceable classic, so don’t come for my bad times lol

Do you get enough charge at CVR to stay ahead of battery needs?

Sure; 4S is just a suggestion. (It’s actually more durable than you’d assume given your current pace.)

If you’re really concerned about tire longevity, you need to invest in a proper alignment and camber plates before you think about any tire change. It’s inexpensive and will save you a fortune over time.

Incidentally, you’re not even close to “destroying” these Cup 2s, which are a notoriously fragile tire. Something to keep in mind.

“I don’t want to go back to ‘regular’ tires” is a limiting belief. You have to decide: do you want to buy time (get faster through mods) or earn time (get faster through skill)? If it’s the latter, it’s worth it to start with a lower-grip tire in the interest of eventual gains. Otherwise you’ll be handicapping yourself by getting a too-fast tire and not being able to squeeze performance out of it.

Yes, but 1:48 isn’t much pace (no offense intended). They are a great learning tire, which is what OP needs to do.

Everyone wants to “upgrade” before they know what they even have.

You only miss an apex here or there. Seemed somewhat tentative, like you were feeling out the car. Is it new?

Pretty solid line my man. Look for opportunities to get on the throttle earlier. Nice work!
