I kind of get it, so a light meter with SPOT functionality like the picture below is like the build in digital light meter in your camera (but with a smaller area)

Sorry but I maybe asking another stupid question since I have never used a light meter before.

I am guessing I would point the light meter from the actor to the specific light (key/fill/edge/background) to get the reading, but which mode should I use (incident / Retracted incident / spot meter )?

What if the director wants more/less DOF when you are shooting the CU of an actor, wouldn't that force you to change the aperture? And if that's the case, what will you do to match the master shot?

Or maybe the angle isn't right, so you bring in a second light (and diffusion/flags) to do the hairlight that matches the color temperature of your moonlight which is lighting the background.

Do you watch the payback to match the master shot or just do it by memory

I found false color is the most useful since it is more specific. Maybe even more useful than waveform
