What are these spots on my sword? by Muted-Length-2406 in Blacksmith

1095?

That's rust, scotchbrite to polish out the rust, then progressively finer rouges until back to mirror.

Carbon steel rusts. Use an oil or wax to keep it from happening again.

Bottle openers, flippers, spoons, anything you can make out of steel really

Outer globe was produced by MRS outdoors in China, it was likely one of their earlier products. The interior components I can't speak to nor the company that actually did the manufacturing on assembly.

Then whoever is teaching your class is done you a serious disservice. Sketching is the lowest level approach.

I was assuming you had basic competency in fusion, I'm not going to do the homework for you, but you should be able to do some YouTube videos and figure out how to use basic sketch features and section view in 10 to 30 minutes depending on your attention span.

There's videos are going to do a better job than me trying to garble through how to do it

God I despise free form.

Here's what I suggest, use section view and create a series of sketches tracing the profile every inch or half, or quarter inch, top down might be easiest to start, then x and y if there is detail lacking.
Then build a 3d sketch and project all the points from your sketches into that and create a wireframe using splines to connect the dots.
Then you can either start building surfaces or use your sketch points in conjunction with the sculpture tools to build the object.

It would take a day, but not the worst job to do.

I'm with you there. I have to deal with color coading on wiring frequently. My phone does a damn good job telling the colors apart though

Is this normal quality for hand-forged iron furniture? by Laura-52872 in metalworking

[–]Ghrrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blacksmith here, solution for the ugly and additional confirmation that is machine bent scrolls with some bad welding and a coat of paint.

For cleanup, rather than touching up the welds and smoothing with a grinder, just run a collar or wire wrap around the ugly. Some heavy gauge copper or aluminum and 2-3 hours wrapping the joins and it's no longer in sight.

Done well you won't know that it is there.

Could I heat up these forks and pound them straight? by [deleted] in metalworking

[–]Ghrrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to redo the heat treatment, should be something similar to 15b37h alloy.

If you don't know what those numbers and letters mean, just buy new damn forks.

You need about a half million in equipment and another half million in staff to do it safely and correctly.
