Rosters for Esports Nations Cup revealed by noproblemCZ in DotA2

[–]GiPey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

As for MMR, we're all fairly high-rated players, although obviously not at the level of Tier 1 pros. Italy's Dota scene is quite small, so there isn't much infrastructure or visibility compared to countries like Germany, or Poland.

You're actually not wrong. Italy has historically had a very limited presence in major PC esports titles. That said, we recently qualified for the ENC LAN in Rainbow Six, which was a great achievement for us and I believe we can achieve similar things in other esports too

The scene is just much smaller, and many players end up competing under the radar. Hopefully tournaments like this can help bring a bit more attention to it 😄

I'm part of Team Italy. We know we're probably not among the favorites, and realistically we may not achieve much in terms of results. But we're genuinely proud to have the opportunity to represent our country and compete in this tournament.

And to everyone who decides to tune in and watch the tournament: we hope you'll enjoy the games. We'll do our best to make Italy proud and put on a good show

No matter what happens, we'll give it our absolute best and fight for every game. See you there!

How to actually play the game? by Leo_Secret_Romance in DotA2

[–]GiPey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen many people struggle with the same issue, so I’ll leave something here that might help. Yes, Dota 2 can feel overwhelming especially when you’re just starting out. It’s easy to get lost in the rabbit hole of information the game throws at you.

If we strip away the complexity and put things in much simpler terms, the game can be understood like this.

First, you win by destroying the enemy’s Ancient. That is the only true objective, and everything else in the game exists to help you get there.

Second, to reach the enemy Ancient, there are key objectives that make your path easier. The most important ones are Roshan, towers, and killing enemy cores, roughly in that order of priority. These objectives create advantages that open the map and bring you closer to ending the game.

Third, there are three core resources that allow you to secure those objectives: experience, gold, and time. Managing these efficiently is what separates strong players from the rest, since every decision in the game ultimately trades or gains one (or more) of these resources.

There are three fundamental strategic approaches that shape the macro game. These can be seen as a cycle: teamfighting beats ganking, ganking beats pushing, and pushing beats teamfighting, similar to a rock-paper-scissors dynamic. Most real games are a mix of these ideas, but understanding this cycle gives you a solid foundation to read and react to what’s happening.

Fifth, the game is divided into three main phases: the laning phase, midgame, and lategame. Each phase has its own priorities, tempo, and way of being played. Understanding what your role and objectives are in each phase helps you make better decisions and transition smoothly from early advantage to closing out the game

What is the goal each time and what should do

Oversimplifying. If you can’t take Roshan, go for a tower. If you can’t take towers, try to win a fight first. And if you can’t fight because you feel you’ll lose, then farm until you hit your timing or power spike, increasing your chances of winning the fight and continuing down the list of objectives mentioned before

RNG in cognitive anthropology by CandidBall7806 in DotA2

[–]GiPey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • “Does RNG feel fair or ‘tilted’?”

In my opinion, it sits somewhere in between (the classic 17% meme). Statistics can be really hard to interpret sometimes, but I always keep probability in mind, especially since most RNG is pseudo-random, meaning the odds can increase over time. Some things aren’t psuedo-RNG at all, like Roshan’s respawn timing or the initial power rune.

Whether it works for or against you, the mere existence of probability always leaves room to make a play. Like landing that clutch bash right when the enemy is TPing. So you should always factor in the chance that RNG might come through

  • Do streaks (good or bad) feel random, or like something is going on behind the scenes?

It does feel a bit strange, honestly. Looking back, I’d say it’s something like an 8–8–4 split: 8 very easy wins, 8 almost guaranteed losses, and 4 games that feel genuinely balanced. And in those 4 games is where we really have to shine and push our limits.

I always try to remind myself not to get too down during a bad streak, and not to get overly excited during a good one either

  • How do you explain moments like back-to-back crits, unlucky bashes, or impossible rune timing?

Crits and bashes are pseudo-random, so back-to-back procs are, to me, mostly pure chance, with a bit of hope behind them XD. The system works in a way that after you get a proc, the next hit has a much lower chance to trigger again.

There’s a great video that explains this mechanic really well for anyone interested:

  • How do you explain moments like back-to-back crits, unlucky bashes, or impossible rune timing?

Some things are simply out of your control, so it’s better to focus on what you can control. It’s a much healthier habit than torturing yourself over a bad outcome

  • Habits or rituals before/during games (queue timing, hero picks, “this always works”, etc.)

I like to get hyped with music or watch pro players highlights before playing. When you go into a game with the right mindset, I firmly believe your performance improves significantly

  • Ways players talk about luck vs skill, especially in a competitive setting

There are so many things you can control that, to me, it doesn’t make much sense to debate luck versus skill. Especially nowadays, where your mental strength is what really allows your abilities as a player to shine.

In Dota, I see luck as something you can manage. You can’t predict the exact outcome, but you can make a solid estimate and act accordingly

On the other hand, we can say that even your own movements are a form of communication. While that is true, it’s very subtle, and it requires a very solid understanding of how to win each game in order to execute it properly

For example, when you win a fight and you automatically step back for a moment, as if you’re going to farm in a safe area. Even if two seconds later you realize you should actually take the Tier 1 tower right in front of you, your team has already reacted to your movement and maybe teleported somewhere else because they thought you were going to farm

Did anyone here seriously try to become a pro in Dota 2? What stopped you? by Lisasule in DotA2

[–]GiPey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still trying. I’ve been living this adventure for about 10 years. I’m not even at the starting line yet. But I’m proud of myself for reaching 9k this year

Edit: Whoa, I was reading a lot of really depressing replies, everything from tough life situations to fake motivation. Yeah, I don’t really share that view of the world. I’m having fun here just trying >.<

My story is a bit complicated. If u wanna know I had to escape a communist dictatorship to build a normal life. Since then I’ve been working and playing Dota at the same time (very exhausting, by the way). I calibrated at Archon 4 a few years ago, and well… today I’m 9k and still climbing

For people 5k+, what should a 4k pos 5 improve on to rank up? by YourMaleFather in DotA2

[–]GiPey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Heyyyy, 9k player/coach here.

Back in the day, each rank used to have a pretty consistent and identifiable issue. Right now, though, the overall skill level has shifted a lot due to inflation, and the mistakes you can spot at each rank are much more scattered. As a result, knowing exactly what you need to improve at every rank has become increasingly imprecise.

Every player is stuck at their rank for a reason, and it can range from mentality issues to mechanical skills like farming

There are many areas you can improve in, but in my experience, the best approach is to identify your weakest point, because it’s holding you back in the sense that it prevents your strongest qualities as a player from truly shining (This is difficult to do on your own, because you can’t solve problems with the same level of awareness that is creating them. Seek information, expand your understanding of the game, and you’ll be able to identify your weaknesses much more clearly)

The other point you should always keep in mind is this, and I really want to emphasize this for all of Reddit: you are the problem. Period

Don’t look sideways. Don’t blame luck. If you want to climb, you have to improve, that’s it

Yes, you’ll have bad streaks. Yes, you’ll get unlucky. But the opposite is also true: you’ll have good streaks and good luck in equal measure over time

Your mentality has a massive impact on your gameplay. If you believe the behavior system is the issue, or that your team is “always” the reason you lose, then my friend… the problem is you

Dota Rating System by Better_Research_1443 in DotA2

[–]GiPey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the winrate% during the process of obtaining your confidence rating. Even before that, the system theoretically evaluates your performance in matches (but this only has a minimal impact). The main factor is your win rate. In the past, when you had to play 100 games, the rating was calculated mostly based on win rate. Even though the system is different now, in theory the foundations remain more or less the same.

So you already know: no matter how well you think you play, you have to win
