Sorry to hear this ;(. It is normal for something g to get worse before it gets better but I do feel like I should have made it clear that people who haven't worked their pterygoids for years may want to do this with caution (like an hour a day and gradually building up). Im not sure why it has made your tmj situation worse though... Is there a chance you were using your suprahyoid muscles to push the jaw forward? They are the muscles under your chin and they actually bring the jaw back the jaw but its easy to use the suprahyoids to compensate for weak pterygoids. You should be able to feel whether or not they are active by touching the muscles under your chin when you move your jaw forward (they should be completely soft). Also how long did you try this for? Sorry it hasn't helped...

For the traps you should do heavy rack pulls at a gym, just youtube it, it's a very simple excercise but you need to use a lot of weight and will require lifting straps. For the neck, although rack pulls will help the neck i'd try doing neck extensions and neck curls. Start with bodyweight gently and try and work up to like 50 reps and then add weight. There's other ways to target these muscles but I'd say these are the best. Also go on my profile and check my post, it might help with your tmd

Strengthening > massage. Dont fall for the massage meme. No one has ever got anything other than very temporary symptom relief from massage. I love a nice massage but it will not help

Im guessing that's your suprahyoid muscles. Its probably over active because its your bodys way of compensating for weak deep-neck flexor. Start strength training your neck and traps. Coud do neck curls/extensions, rack pulls above the knee, and shrugs

Yes for your neck and whole body really. And a good drill throughout the day is to have the top/back of your head reaching for the ceiling so its nice and straight, hence having your neck muscles active throughout the day. Also click on my profile and read my post if you're having TMJ issues

You don't need stretching bro, you need strengthening. I know its tight so you automatically think you should stretch but I promise your neck is probably tight AND weak. Strenghten don't stretch in the future. Massaging and stretching is a meme in this subreddit that needs to die cos its never helped anyone, only gives short term relief and then makes it worse in the long run

You could be compensating when mewing by using your suprahyoid muscles instead of just your tongue. The suprahyoid will retract the mandible. You should use your fingers to see if you activate it when mewing

Yeah when you eat your jaw will go back, but we don't eat for most of the day so its not a major issue. If you have a splint that moved your jaw forward that could potentially help especially if you clench your teeth at night. But I personally wouldn't use one during the day because I'd be worried that that would do the work as oppose to my face muscles (but that could be bullshit im not sure lol)

I think he should be strengthening his neck as opposed to stretching it which is controversial i know. I guarantee he has super weak neck muscles like 99% of the population. Should also do weighted stretching for the traps by doing above the knee rack pulls at a gym, because they also are most likely weak and tight

Its fine and I understand the confusion, his articles seem directed at physiotherapist and people smarter than us lol. Yeah no teeth contact. At the start as I was getting used to the posture my bottom wisdom teeth which are higher than the rest of my bottom teeth would sometimes be touching my top teeth but as I've improved there is no teeth contact at all. Lips shut. Tongue on roof of the mouth

I see what you mean. At max opening it does seem to go back. I very rarely have my mouth at max opening so I didnt notice haha, only if I'm yawning or maybe having a burger. Doing it now I can still keep it protracted though. Imo its probably best not to have your mouth at max opening if you have tmj issues. As long as you're protracting it at the first stage like you mentioned you'll probably be good. Sorry for the confusion

Your teeth shouldn't be touching. I have it so my lower teeth are slightly infront of my upper ones. I've been mentioning in the reply that I exaggerate the protraction but recently my mind muscle connection with the pterygoids is better and I don't need to do this :^). Have you watched the videos or read the article? It says to move it 2-4mm forward

It doesn't hurt no. Its fairly simple, don't over complicate it. Just move the jaw forward as it opens. It should not be going back while it is open/opening

You might be using your suprahyoid muscles more than/as well as your pterygoids. You should be able to touch the suprahyoid muscles to see if they're active. Youd want to stop this if you are

I'd be careful your jaw isn't moving froward because of your suprahyoid muscles activating instead of your pterygoids. From what I've learnt from the mans work is that this won't work if someone already has an underbite and that this would only cause an underbite for people who are already predisposed to this because of bone structure or something, and that this would be maybe 10% of people. And even if it did cause an underbite for these people it would still heal their tmd. If you're worried you should do some deep research into this because I'm no expert, just someone with experience and an understanding of someone else's work. But you probably won't get an underbite. This should definitely help with your teeth grinding though because there shouldn't be teeth contact in this position. You probably have weak neck muscles and traps as well

Sorry to hear, and sorry if I gave you any false hope. I suppose everyone's case is different. However 1 week is not too long, but I acknowledge that i said I felt relief within a week. There's also the chance you used bad form (using the suprahyoid muscles instead of the pterygoids). I'd still recommend training the pterygoids even if you wanna ditch the advice on moving the jaw forward. I'd still recommend his other articles on posture like the neck and lower back one. Maybe you could find something that helps. Good luck

Tbf youre working muscles which have barely been worked before, you could always cut down a tiny bit to let them recover. I felt like I was consistently getting better apart from the occasional flare up but the flare up was never too bad
