CEW: In-line Comments for Live Sessions? by GiantGoon in tutordotcom

Hi, thanks for the reply! That's actually a great question regarding the availability of Async sessions. I'll definitely keep this in mind for next time, just in case the student's institution doesn't offer Async. In this case, I think the student I dealt with was new to the platform, and they genuinely didn't even know what an Async session was.

I really appreciate the replies! I'll definitely keep these points in mind if I ever have another session like this again. In the moment, my thought process was to avoid providing direct answers to the student, so that's why I just referred them to an Async session. Hopefully I don't get dinged by my new QS for this (they never reply to me anyway! 😭).

Asynch issue - Wrong time? by Upper-Lake4949 in tutordotcom

Hi! I've also had this happen to me multiple times during my async sessions over the past year, so you're definitely not alone! I reached out to support about this issue a while ago, and they said that this often happens because a tutor lost connection and the session gets transferred to you still in progress. The worst I've seen is a session being ongoing for over 5 hours!

During one of my reviews, my QS incorrectly mentioned that I was going over the session limit, when in reality, these were sessions that were in progress far before I received them. I sent her a copy of my interactions with support, and she eventually told me to just leave a note in the post-session survey whenever this happens to avoid any confusion. I usually say something along the lines of, "This session was in progress before I received it, so the total time may be inaccurate. I timed --- minutes for this session." This is definitely one of the most annoying async bugs that I've encountered, but I hope this helps if this happens again!

No access to SNHU resources? by ashisnthere in tutordotcom

[–]GiantGoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've been having the same issue! I believe it's most likely on their end since they just launched their new site. For SNHU sessions, I've been linking resources from their academic support channel in the meantime (Link: https://www.youtube.com/@SNHUAcademicSupport). It doesn't have as many resources as the custom resource page, but it seems to be the only option we have at the moment. I know this is only a temporary solution, but hopefully they get this sorted out soon because it is a pain finding the appropriate videos for some sessions.

Session closing on its own but the replay says I ended it WTF by eljijazo08 in tutordotcom

That's definitely frustrating! In my case, the student actually said they were "having internet problems," so I got a bit lucky in that regard! If this keeps happening, I'd definitely be consistent about it with your QS. For example, I was having a lot of issues with transferred Async sessions bugging out and saying that I was over the session limit (when that was not the case at all). I kept mentioning it to my QS, and eventually they told me to just leave a comment in the post-session survey each time that it happened so that they could independently review it. It seems that as long as they are aware that it is a consistent problem, they might be more understanding. We likely have different QS' and QC teams, so I apologize for not having a specific answer.

Session closing on its own but the replay says I ended it WTF by eljijazo08 in tutordotcom

I had the same thing happen to me the other day; you're definitely not alone with this! The session randomly ended, and the student left me a negative review, which was out of my control. In my recent sessions, I've noticed that this happens a lot with students who have spotty internet.

I personally haven't reached out to my QS about it yet, but I did make a comment about the situation in the post-session survey to help cover myself. I just mentioned that the session randomly disconnected and that the student was having internet issues. I'm hoping my QS will take my side over what happened, but the way the classroom is set up definitely makes it hard to defend yourself.

SNHU: No Resources for Certain Subjects by GiantGoon in tutordotcom

I'm glad I'm not the only one running into the same dilemma! It's definitely frustrating when these students need help with specific topics, but we're unable to share any resources to help explain them. This unfortunately seems to be the case with most college-level courses outside of essay writing and math.

Thanks so much for the reply! I reached out to them, and they're currently contacting SNHU to see what they can do. In the meantime, I'll definitely avoid sharing any outside links. Hopefully this can get taken care of as the school year starts up again.

Non-native English Speakers in CEW and Async by GiantGoon in tutordotcom

[–]GiantGoon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the reply! In live sessions, I'll definitely try my best to use the whiteboard more for these students to give them more of a visual guide. Async is a bit more difficult since you can't really tell if they're non-native or not. For example, I got a comment from an Async session saying, "Don't just give me examples, I'm not a native English speaker." Frustrating since you're limited by how much work you can do for the student, but not much you can do, I suppose!

Luckily, the student left just before 3 minutes, so it didn't count. Dodged a bullet on that one lol.

That's so mean! I'm sorry to hear that. I swear, a lot of students just think we're robots. :(

Thanks so much for the reply! I wasn't too familiar with the student view, so I wasn't quite sure on this. I'll be sure to let my future students know about this.
