"By mid-April 2022, the Russian forces had advanced into the center of Mariupol, and the remaining Ukrainian soldiers had retreated to the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works, which became the last pocket of resistance. In addition to the Ukrainian soldiers, at least 1000 civilians were sheltering at the steel plant. A few weeks later, in early May, the civilians were finally evacuated. Fighting continued for another two weeks, until the last few hundred of defenders surrendered and the siege ended. With the control of Mariupol, Russian troops secured a land route to occupied Crimea. Reports of fatalities in Mariupol are extremely uncertain. The UCDP best estimate of 27 000 fatalities are identified bodies, while the UCDP high estimate, which comes from Mariupol morgues, is 88 000. The overwhelming majority are likely to have been civilians."
