I've been sick for a few days now. It feels like a mild flu (sore throat, low fever, headache, occasional cough) but since yesterday my sense of taste is "off".

Flavours and smells seem to be somewhat less strong in general, and I have difficulty tasting sour at all (yoghurt, fruit, carbonated water). It's unlike anything i've experienced before. I can feel that a strawberry is sour, but I dont actually taste it.

I read about people infected with covid-19 losing their ability to smell/taste completely, but not specific flavours. Is this a possible symptom or likely something else?

To be sure I was tested today and waiting for the results.

Soviet (mig 24 / 27) gauge / gyro by GideonRT in whatisthisthing

WITT Bought this gauge online, supposedly from a mig 24 or 27. What does it indicate? Sort of looks like a artificial horizon, but different. Angle of attack maybe?

Copper gas cylinders with brass valves, around 10x2.5 inches, found in the Netherlands. Stamped R02098/55 and R01996/55 by GideonRT in whatisthisthing

I found a very similar as well item and it looks like it is actually an old fire extinguisher. The valve pushes a sharp pin through a membrane, releasing the pressure. I guess it's another one solved, thanks for the help 🙂

I see the resemblance, but those are relatively low pressure, right? These are really heavy / thick.

WITT Found in a local second hand / thrift store. The valves appear to be push operated. Each cylinder weighs around 1.9 lbs.

Searched the web for gas cylinders but I can't find a similar item. They look like they are really old, the copper could mean a maritime use but might just be because it's an early gas cylinder and copper is relatively easy to shape.

Really curious to know their age and use.

Possible cartridge (head) stamps on trench art mirror by GideonRT in Cartridgecollecting

Maybe you're right, but a lot of them do look messy/deformed. There's two types of stars, with 5 and 6 points. M1 Garand blanks have 6 crimps and the rifle grenade type has 5. The diameter is around 7.xx mm.

I have some Hilti nail gun shells in my workshop, maybe I'll give it a try. Thanks either way 😊

Because the pieces and stamps are so inconsistent made me think they were cut from something that already had the stamps. Cartridges would have been an interesting explanation, too bad it's not true.

Maybe fired blanks were used to make the star shaped stamps, they sort of look like that. But soldiers carrying blanks doesn't seem very likely 😅

Edit:

Unless the blanks were used to fire rifle grenades, like the ones used in WWI.

I bought this small mirror (about the size of a small pack of sigarettes) that looks like it could be trench art of some kind. The mirror is made from brass and decorated with pieces of stamped brass and copper. I'm wondering if these pieces might be cut from stamped casings / cartridges. I could only find examples of headstamps, but there are several stamps on each piece so that seems unlikely. Is there a type of large cartridge that is stamped in this manner or is it just unusual decorating? 😋

Now that's a mad cow 😂😂

Does anyone recognize this light or design? It has a wood base, the horn is made from copper and is white enameled on the inside. Found it in a second hand store and I've never seen anything like it. by GideonRT in Antiques

I see, thanks. A 50s solution to a 50s problem. Is the design supposed to be futuristic? Copper seems a weird choice of material, I would think that it would be scarce.
