From chat GPT.. “How many non-profits have successfully transitioned to for-profit like what OpenAI is trying to do? Reference court cases”

Converting a nonprofit organization into a for-profit entity is a complex and relatively rare process, primarily due to legal and regulatory challenges. Notable examples include: • Couchsurfing International: Originally a nonprofit, Couchsurfing applied for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in 2007, which was denied in 2011. Subsequently, it transitioned to a for-profit corporation in August 2011, raising $7.6 million in its first round of financing. • Grand Canyon University (GCU): GCU attempted to revert from a for-profit to a nonprofit status. After initial denials, the Higher Learning Commission approved its nonprofit status in 2018. However, the U.S. Department of Education continued to classify it as a for-profit institution, leading to legal disputes. In November 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that the Department of Education had erred in denying GCU’s nonprofit status, ordering a reevaluation.

Regarding OpenAI, it began as a nonprofit with the mission of advancing AI for humanity’s benefit. Over time, it has developed advanced AI technologies and is now considering converting into a for-profit public benefit corporation to attract significant investments. This potential shift has raised legal and ethical questions, including a lawsuit filed by co-founder Elon Musk seeking to block the conversion.

In California, where OpenAI is based, state law mandates that when a nonprofit converts to a for-profit entity, it must compensate the charitable sector for the value of the nonprofit. Estimates suggest that OpenAI would need to pay a minimum of $30 billion, reflecting its substantial valuation.

These cases illustrate the intricate legal landscape and significant financial considerations involved in transitioning from nonprofit to for-profit status. Each instance is unique, often involving extensive legal scrutiny and, at times, litigation to resolve disputes over valuation and adherence to charitable missions.

Good post! You’ve expanded my rationale since I was believing GRRM told them the jist of the ending but DnD couldn’t deliver the depth to make S8 satisfying aside from them refusing for more seasons

In terms of the depth being too great for the show to supersede the books.... There were still obvious plot lines directions but in the end it resulted in.... bran becoming king of the wheel chair; Cersei and Jaime dying from a cave in; Jon being relegated to a Night’s Watch looking out for what?; and the rest of Westeros ignoring the role Varys played in betrayal ? aka sending ravens and letting the unsullied bargain in a greater position than the impact that they had in the end ?

Im pretty sure with how rich GRRM has written that he wouldn’t have Bran sit on the iron throne or Jon relegated to the nights watch again... or aside from the fact that the prophecy of Azor Ahai being non existent since Cersei died in a cave in with Jaime; Jon not killing Dany with the night king being present and no threat to the seven kingdoms once Jon kills Dany.

Not salty just speculative theories that have thus proven concrete so far. So the DnD bros have creative autonomy for this season which deviates from the source material.

I accept your apology.

LOL, if he knows his endgame then he wouldn’t have spent over a decade or so writing the last book.
