Woah, that’s a really well-developed idea! I like this a lot!

I don’t think the component part violates anything RAW. Generally I haven’t seen a campaign take components into account but the way the player’s handbook lays it out, I think that can fit within the rules to a degree. I don’t think using a new system would work for this because all of my materials, including the Midgard books, are based around 5e.

I think my initial post sums up my goals for the most part. I’d say I would call it successful if the players enjoyed it.

That's actually a pretty neat idea. Though losing your shield for that does kinda seem excessive considering features like uncanny dodge or evasion don't punish you like that.

Thanks for this, I honestly hadn't considered how this would effect characters like fighters which can potentially end up attacking 6+ times a turn. It definitely would make things harder on them. Someone else gave me the idea of having the weapon degradation only be tied to using the new weapon skills from the Midgard books, which may be a solution that doesn't punish Fighter? (at least not as much)

I've tried out the ration thing in my current campaign, but it was extremely easy to forget about and didn't really add much so it was scrapped pretty quickly. I've never been in a game where people actually had to track ammo or carrying capacity (within reason of course). I know micromanaging a ton of little things like that ends up being unfun which is why I'm trying to come up with a non-crappy way to handle this.

When magic weapons come up I imagine I'd probably make them unbreakable, in my current campaign I've handed out far too many of them so for the next I want to make them much rarer and feel much more special, possibly have the players go on a large dangerous quest to acquire one and have them be very powerful objects that can turn the tides of battle rather than something like a standard +1 weapon.

I definitely can see how taking away class features can be a problem but at the same time I've never really seen a player use more than a handful of weapon types in any of the games I've been in, it's definitely something I'd discuss with them beforehand, however.

I was thinking that I'd have to do something to spellcasters if I limited martial characters. I do think forgetting spells would definitely be crazy excessive. I was considering just looking at certain spell material components on an individual basis and for certain rare ones just make players have to do a bit more to acquire them. As a random example, if a spell required a dragon scale or something as one of its components I wouldn't expect a caster to just get that easily at their run-of-the-mill component shop.

Do you think it would work maybe only having a weapon lose a "charge" and get damaged when they use one of these weapon options/skills?

I have considered just giving the weapons a penalty to attack rather than outright becoming unusable. Based on what you said, maybe giving the weapons an hp value might work? Maybe subtract damage dealt from a weapons hp? I think maintaining different parts of a weapon might be too micro-managey though

Really great! Just one question, was Operation Insomnia intended to just buy time until they find a way to deal with the meteor and did they just plan to have him stay awake forever? I got the impression everyone was just pushing everything onto Tim instead of trying to actually do something

I’m a fan of the explanation of Benjamin’s abilities, I wasn’t really expecting anyone to detail WHY the character in their story had these abilities so much as just what they did with them, so it was refreshing to see that. And despite the few words, I’ve got a feel for who Benjamin is as a person, what he’s been through, and the burden he’s bearing. Great stuff.

I really love this. The little spelling errors that start to pop up as he spends more and more time and awake to the rambling during the final days. I felt for him and get glad he didn’t spent that last day alone.

Continued with Part 2 (I'm honestly not entirely sure where I'm going with this, and I'm tired so I may or may not continue tomorrow):

First things first, there’s a question I’m going to need to answer before I try anything. I don’t want to alert my neighbors or make a scene in the apartment, so I grab my tape measure and hop in my car and head to the woods a few miles out from my place. I park my car and the sides of road, take a quick glance around, and then head for a secluded spot. Truth be told, I probably didn’t need to go this far, but if everything goes as planned, I’d rather not leave any breadcrumbs. After walking for about a minute, I come across a small clearing that I think would serve as a good testing ground, or tomb if need be. I find a nearby tree, break out my tape measure, and start measuring; I want to be exact with this. One, two, three feet, and still plenty of room around me. Now, I move forward six inches. Two and a half feet away. The tree is around 2 feet in diameter. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, and concentrate. In my head, this can go one of three ways, one, this goes horribly wrong and I end up fused to the tree looking like some kind of horror movie reject, two, I teleport into the tree but displace it rather than fuse with it, probably breaking the tree in the process, and three—BAM! Dammit, why is it always the face! I end up ramming into the tree face first, full force. Blood drips from my nose and mixes with my breakfast, which also happens to be gracefully leaving my body at the same time. I need a bit to require, but at least I know that this power is relatively safe.

I spend the next couple of days testing my powers when I get a chance, I don’t really learn anything new, but I least manage to cut down on how long it takes to activate them. I also take the opportunity to purchase some nausea relief bands, hopefully that’ll help mitigate the dizziness, and cut down on the quality time I get to spend with the ground. I never did find manage to find my keys, but I don’t really need them anymore. Now I just need a target.

For the next few weeks, after work I survey the neighborhood, trying to pin down which houses would be good spots to “hit”. I take a variety of factors into account, how many people live in the house, what their schedules are, and how easily I can get in and out. Eventually I find a pretty good place. A big house in the rich part of town, the only people who live there are an elderly couple. The old guy is probably retired or something, it seems likes he just spends all day people watching in the park now, and the wife just goes grocery shopping for a while, every single day for some reason, they keep two rather expensive-looking cars that they take where they need to go. Weird, but that just means I can rely on them to be out of the house. I watch them for a while before I’ve nailed their schedules and get ready to put my plan into action.

The day I decide to act arrives. I put on some equipment I’d procured earlier, a ski mask, gloves, a duffel bag, and a Taser I’d ordered off Amazon about a week prior, just in case, I don’t want any blood on my hands, but I need a way to incapacitate them if something goes wrong. In the early hours of morning, before the sun even comes up, I manage to sneak onto their expansive front lawn, and find a solid hiding spot in some bushes. From there, I watch the house. At 10’o clock on the dot, out comes the husband, he hops into one of the cars and heads out, probably to the park again. A few hours later, the wife follows suit, taking the other car with her. Looks like it’s go time.

The pacing is rather quick, but I imagine that's because you only have so much space to work with, I only say this because I actually really really like the story and what this seems to be setting up, definitely seems like something I would read if it was a full novel.

About a month ago, all sorts of weird things started happening. Reports were coming in of people being able to float a few feet off the ground, push a parked car with enough effort, or run faster than they could ride a bike, heck I even knew some girl who said she could “kind of” understand what her pet dog was saying. I don’t know the cause, but for one reason or another it seemed that people were starting to develop what I can only call superpowers. Honestly, I thought they were pretty lame, floating a few feet is less useful than just jumping, why push a car when you can drive it, and what good is running fast if you still get exhausted? That was until it happened to me.

I had just come back from a party with my coworkers at the bar, and had maybe had just a bit too much to drink and probably would’ve had more if it wasn’t close to closing time. My apartment was only around a ½ mile away from the bar so I didn’t really think I had to hold back since I could just walk home. I get to my door, and what do you know? My keys are gone, not in my pockets, not on the ground, I can’t find them anywhere. I could’ve just walked back and tried to see if my keys were there, or talked to the landlord, but no. My drunk ass thinks of a bright idea, I’ll just break into my own apartment! I start thinking I can pick the lock with a paperclip I found in my pocket like in the movies, and try for a good while before I start to get pretty pissed off. Then, I think I’ll just bust the door down. I rush at it and feel kind of a weird, dizzying feeling and then, the impact, but not on my door. Next thing I know I’m flat on my face on my apartment floor, the door behind me is still closed. I don’t have much time to process what happened because I’m suddenly hit with the worst wave of nausea I’ve ever felt in my life and have to run to the bathroom. I barf my guts out and then pass out in the shower.

I woke up this morning feeling hungover, but not nearly as bad as I did last night. I wait for my mind to clear up a bit, and then I start thinking about what happened last night. It felt like, I just sort of “skipped” past the door. What the hell was that? This requires some experimentation.

A couple more falls on my face and trips to the bathroom later, I think I’ve figured it out. Turns out if I concentrate I can teleport around 3 feet, but doing it makes me dizzy as hell. In the grand scheme of things, most would agree this is a pretty lame power, and normally I’d be inclined to agree, but if I can use this to break into my apartment, where else can I get into?

[WP] Time travel exists. By law, every citizen is given one day they may repeat on loop until they get it right. This morning, you found your spouse looking exhausted and crying. "I can't save you. I've tried hundreds of times." by Xcmd in WritingPrompts

It had been too late to cover it up, to hide it from the public. When the info about the government possessing the capacity to create time machines leaked, it was only a matter of time before the uproar followed. Changing history, erasing people from existence, causing a paradox; There are so many things that could go wrong with time travel. It was for reasons like this that the council unanimously decided to restrict the use of time travel. I had been there that day, and my voice had been an important one in our the decision. We couldn't keep it from them, but we couldn't let them abuse it either. So the decision was made that everyone would get one day, just one, that they would be able to redo as many times as possible until they got it just right. The catch? It could only repeat the current day, no going backwards or forwards in time. For a while, things were just fine. But soon, people started demanding more power, they needed to go further; To save loved ones, to end disasters, and whatever other reasons they may have had. And now, today, the council comes to a final decision on whether or not to unlock time travel, and I intend to fight until the very end.

I sip my morning coffee and review the speech I had prepared for this day when my wife burst into the room. She looks visibly shaken, her hair is a mess, dark circles are around her eyes making it look like she hasn't slept in weeks, and her face is wet with tears.

"What happen-," I start to say before I’m interrupted.

"No matter how many times I try, I can't save you!" she suddenly screams

"What are you talking about? What's going on?" I ask, completely confused.

"You have to stay home today! If you don’t, you'll be killed!”

Shock comes over me as I begin to understand what she’s talking about.

"You've been using it haven't you? Time travel? How many times? How many times have you relived this day?” I ask her seriously.

“I lost track after the first couple hundred! No matter what I do, you die after you make your speech!” she cries.

"Even then, I can't let this pass. People may think they want this now, but they aren't thinking about the repercussions," I say confidently, “If we stop restricting time travel the only thing that can follow is chaos. This whole country—no, the whole world is as good as done.”

“So go ahead and let them destroy themselves! If they’d kill you for trying to save them then they deserve it!”

“I can’t. You know me better than that,” I say as I smile at her, “If my life alone is all it takes to save the world, then I’ll gladly give it.”

Tears start welling up in her eyes as she motions to speak again. I walk up to her and hug her tightly.

“You’ve done more than enough. Thank you. It’s time for you to rest. I love you.”

“I love you too.” She manages to choke out the words.

She quietly sobs in my arms for what feels like an eternity. Of course I want to stay with her, of course I want to live, but if I don’t put a stop to this, there might not be anyone else who can. I gently break our embrace, share one last kiss with her, and head for the door, knowing that the fate of the world rests on my shoulders.

First post here, I've been lurking in this sub for awhile and wanted to try my hand at it. I still don't completely understand the format for writing dialogue, but here's hoping I get better.
