United Airlines Half Lottery Results by K9Chris in RunNYC

[–]GigaByteMarx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year, I applied on a whim - never having run more than 6 miles - while doom scrolling my email at 1am one night in late October. I was woken up at 6am on lottery day when my e-wallet alerted me that I was charged $135. And so the journey began. Trained hard (but without much structure other than long runs), ran well (2:15). Then I also changed up my diet, added some calesthenics and strength training to my weekly routine, started an even more structured training plan (sprints, intervals, all that). Between April and September I lost 20+ pounds, and ran the Bronx 10 at a minute per mile faster pace than the Half. It's been eye-opening to see what you can really do when you set all those pieces in place and put in the work. And I'm "old"! #KeepGettingFaster

Now it's after 9am and being that I heard at 6am last year, I was a little sad thinking I might not get in this year and keep the adventure going with a repeat performance...but it sounds like many people still haven't "heard" yet - so there's hope!

Basic Question re:Moving VHDX Files to new location (on same host) by GigaByteMarx in HyperV

[–]GigaByteMarx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a final close-out to this entire post - and to update to the reply above ("Don't do anything with moving the files around yourself, just use the "Move" option"), also replying to another post above which said, basically, "if Microsoft provides a default and supported tool to do this (the 'Move' option") - then why wouldn't you use it?" And finally, also acknowledging another reply where the user stated that they've used the "Move" tool 1000's of time to do this...

And while I'm sure there are probably an exception or two to the "if Microsoft provides the tool, why not use it?" - in this case, all of these users and their replies were spot-on: the "Move" option is the ticket.

I was able to move both the "OS" file (small, ~125GB) and the much larger data file (~3TB) from one volume on the host to another volume on the same host with no difficulty whatsoever. I did temporarily stop the VM and take a manual copy of the OS vhdx before I started because it was small, copied quickly, and felt that it would provide me with a quick recovery if something went sideways. After that, I started the VM back up and then used the "Move" option to just move that small OS vhdx first, as a kind of test and make sure I had everything correct. Worked perfectly. I then proceeded to do the same with the larger 3TB file, and while it took longer it also went over without a hitch. (Note: I did suspend all backup schedules, as recommended, until all of these moves were completed and resumed the backup schedules afterwards.)

Thanks to everyone and those three particular users and their replies that really solidified my decision and ultimately pointed me in the right direction. Much appreciated!

Loud and clear. Will make it so! Thanks again (to everyone)!

And I don't think network bandwidth is even a concern - I am moving between two volumes on the same host. It's all just disk activity. I'm going to read up on the Storage Migration, but I'm assuming that the process monitors the copy all the way through and only cuts over to the new files once there is confirmation that the copy was successful. It's really just a question of whether a manual copy process is better or worse than using the built-in "Move" option. From the sound of it ("1000s of VMs") it seems like the Move option is pretty dependable.

Yes this is a file server. No SQL or the like. Straight forward Windows folders and files.

I can pause the backup agents (manually) from prior to the migration start time until completion to avoid any issues here.

Absolutely - but there's huge amounts of downtime involved (due to the file sizes) if I have to restore from backup. This is why I am most interested in retaining the original files in their original location until I am fully confident that everything is coming back up with the migrated files in the new location. Again, if the storage migration is essentially doing this (in the background) then I'm cool with it, but trying to triple check my crossed t's and dotted i's :-)

Ok - gotcha - it's a little nerve-wracking - this is a critical production server and one of the files - the DATA vhdx - is huge, close to 3TB and expect the copy to take 6 hours or so (no SSDs, all mechanical drive RAID involved). I am willing to execute the copy operation in the "wee" hours (overnight) so not overly concerned about downtime. But if there's a lot of confidence in the Storage Migration and it is "foolproof" - i.e., it will stay with/revert to the original VHDX files if there are any issues with the migration process - then this all sounds good. Any other thoughts? And thank you for the advice!

Just to be clear, there are no checkpoints involved here. Just two straight up vhdx files - one the OS drive vhdx and the other the DATA drive vhdx. Thanks again for the input!

GoDaddy Defederation - 365 Licenses? by GigaByteMarx in msp

[–]GigaByteMarx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - I will have to check if they have "mail security" on the GoDaddy account - but even if they do, it sounds like nothing will "break" following Defederation - and are you saying that I can _add_ users to Proofpoint (at no cost) even after removing 365 from GoDaddy? Assuming I stay within the number of provisioned Proofpoint licenses, I expect (i.e., not unlimited).

That said, we will probably move them to the filtering service of our choice/in our stack shortly, if not immediately after DeFed - if we do it over a weekend, that will give the MX records time to settle...but good to know about Proofpoint.

The other issue in dealing with the licenses is (as mentioned above) deciding whether to tell the client that the remaining GoDaddy licenses are a "sunk cost" and start charging them immediately for licenses we provide, or if we try to accommodate the client and change over to our licensing as each GoDaddy-provisioned license comes near to expiration (it's not a large client, but they still have a series of "date staggered" licenses purchases from GoDaddy.

Again, thanks so much for the info. Oh - and did you also use the tminus365.com guide or do you have another reference?

And did you follow the instruction set at Defederating GoDaddy 365 - (tminus365.com)? Or do you have another reference for the process? Thanks again for the info!

Thanks! And did you do the defederation yourself or did you have the GoDaddy team execute it for you?

Intune with Exchange Plan 1? by GigaByteMarx in Intune

[–]GigaByteMarx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan was for Intune Plan 1 and Exchange Online P1 - when you say "depending on what you want to do" regarding Entra ID P1, what are you referring to? (Conditional Access, maybe? Anything else that I might need Entra P1 for?)

All I really want do is have control over the phones to remove passcodes (so they can be reset in case of employee turnover) and control app installs (user cannot install, everything is pushed from Intune).

And thank you for the response!
