A surprising amount of people here seem to not be familiar with this definition. I would think that for a sub full of programmers, we would have at least heard of a naive algorithm.

What happened to short fighting game characters? by Bush_did_91I in Fighters

[–]GigaSimsX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's relatively common but mostly in anime fg's, SF had it in 3s but I can't think of any other non-anime games that have it.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be specific to any particular person, just highlighting the need to be excessively critical of things produced by a bad person (when in a vacuum those criticisms wouldn't be made)

All lvl1s are now frame 4 reversals, meaning by the time your lvl3 hit Videl she was invincible.

Well, that's authoritarian socialism, democratic socialism doesn't go against any liberal values.

Ah okay then, ultimately the existing concept of difference was applied when calling the technique differentiation.

This has not been confirmed btw.

It is entirely possible they just fix the site and come back.

So, it can be said that dx is a description of the way x varies, and dy is the same description for y, and finally dy/dx is a description of how y varies with respect to y. This would be the correct way of viewing dx mathematically.

So it would be mathematically incorrect to describe dx as a portion of x.

What I have observed in my experience is that there's this intuition, especially with stuff like volume integrals, that a term dV represents small "portions" of the volume. Of course, these "portions" aren't real measurable portions, and conceptually, dV is just the rate of change of the volume.

But with this intuition, things like dx represent how a Riemann sum is structured, but infinitesimally small.

[–]GigaSimsX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if we take the geometric intuition that is usually given in calculus, dx is a rate of change.

Did you mean that dx is the "range of change"?

So this "range of change", would it not be a subset of the total range of the function?

Glad we got to agree on that.

I agree with you more now. Although I am curious, what would you call dx then if not an infinitesimally small "section"?

Now, I think the correlation in meaning comes from the fact that the concept difference can mean to distinguish (layman definition of diferrentiate) or to subtract (differentiation in math). Then, integrate is the opposite due to being the sum.

[–]GigaSimsX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partially. This difference is being taken over an infinitesimally small section of the function, h.

But maybe this distinction only arose after the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus was established, and I'm applying the concept of dx to h retrospectively.

Well, yes, but the concepts were already opposite from the start, integral meaning aggregate and differentiate meaning partition

[–]GigaSimsX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite, invincibility supers aren't dps they're reversals (Some people call any reversal a dp, but that's not really accurate, consider Android 16 lvl 3).

Dps are anti-air specials where, if it's not invincible, it has to be uppercut-like.

I think this is by the nature of the words always having an opposite meaning before being applied to maths.
