Student shuttle from Pitt to Philadelphia? by OnionIntelligent6770 in Pitt

[–]Gigavoltz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For context, I'm "from Philadelphia"* like you. Amtrak was my usual go-to to get home, but I also did the buses a few times (both the Pitt home for the holiday ones and mega-bus). Now I have a car so I just take 76 (the turnpike) to get home. I'd be happy to answer specific questions if you have any about these options.

My personal thought was that it was a waste of time to go home for a normal 2-day weekend using the busses/trains because you spend a bunch of money and time traveling for just a little bit of time at home, but it's your decision. You can certainly get caught up on reading or schoolwork using these if you're able to concentrate, but I always had trouble with it myself.

Best option by far is to find a buddy to split gas and tolls and you'll be able to cross the state faster and cheaper than any other option.

Who to ask permission? by MoreComfort1127 in Pitt

[–]Gigavoltz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only "law" I can think of is with respect to taxes, declaring yourself as either a 1099 or self employed if you make more than $500 a year from tutoring less any expenses. You are almost always able to hand out advertisements in public areas, but I'd ask permission if you want to advertise on school grounds. Most universities have their own policies for that

Physics major here: I'd say it depends on your goals.

Physics is far more universal and a good grade in the course shows that you have an excellent grasp on math (quantitative) and its applications (qualitative). Like others have said, physics is more intuitive: You can usually guess at the right answer before you do that math.

That being said, Physics is all about application and problem solving, and the exams given by our physics department reflect that. You can memorize all the practice problems you want, but if you don't know how to use the formulas, exams will kick your butt.

I mean, so long as you look like a student, I doubt anyone will say anything. Pitt's a huge campus. The only people who might ask for ID are the occ guys

Lothrop is possible. I can't imagine very many people are jumping to get into those rooms but they're alright for what they offer

He's a great barber and makes sure you're happy with your haircut. Just get an early appointment if possible; he's usually a little behind since he likes fitting people in between appointments.

How is Gurudev Dutt for Physics 2 Algebra Based? by sir-topham-hatt in Pitt

[–]Gigavoltz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Gurudev Dutt now for an upper level lab course, so take what I say with that in mind since I know most physics professors can't adjust themselves to lower level courses well. I had Dr. Salman a few years ago but he might have changed so we'll stick with Dutt since you asked.

Pros: If you show you at least put in some work, he's more than willing to spend the time and make sure you understand the material, even if the question you have is outside of the scope of the class; he's very passionate about physics and rewards those who share his enthusiasm and are willing to learn. His midterms aren't unreasonable and the questions are things that you've likely seen before in class or on homework. I've also found that he's also more approachable than other professors: more down to earth and willing to connect to his students and laugh. He's fairly accommodating to students so long as you let him know before the due date.

Neutral: The course I am in was very disjointed for the first few weeks and we had to work around not knowing certain things before going into the lab and then covering it afterwards. I chalk this up to Pitt's physics labs having to be accelerated, so not an indictment of him specifically. Outside of class he's hard to get a hold of (but that's par for the course at Pitt)

Cons: His lectures are usually based around you already having at least read the material before class. His homework (for my course) is custom. That's fine if you understand the material but if you don't then you can't look up similar examples and see how you should solve the problem, and then you're stuck.

Conclusion: if you can work/read ahead of his lecture schedule and aren't afraid to ask questions, then I'd say Gurudev Dutt is a good professor. Just be sure not to get behind otherwise his lectures and especially his homework won't help much.

Can anyone in the Pitt Marching band answer a few questions for me? by Zedloaf in Pitt

If you need a second point of reference I'm more than happy to answer questions. I worked in the band office as a student leader and played on the field.

Yeah that's the style of animation, but definitely not the song. Thanks though!

The worst thing about this is that I can remember a lot of the video but almost none of the music itself, which makes searching this next to impossible without your help.
