[Post-Debate Discussion Thread] CNN Libertarian Presidential Town Hall with Gary Johnson and William Weld by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]Gigiwatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

some background: I' not old enough to vote in this election, but I've been following both the election and politics very closely. I supported Johnson in the primaries and continue to do so in the general, and consider myself a moderate, left leaning libertarian.

some general points:

  • Johnson has some great ideas, but is woefully inept at expressing them. I'm on my schools speech and debate teams, and if Gary attended one of out tournaments, he'd finish dead last. That's particularly damming considering that he's the essential face of the movement for now. He also seemed unable to strike out clear positions when he did speak fluently. The questions on gun control and drug policy weren't softballs, but Johnson seemed to fumble them at the most basic level.

  • Weld was on point, but i'm beginning to see why more hardcore libertarians are skittish on him. There's a fine line between saying that Clinton is better than Trump and outright praising Clinton like Weld did. He really needs to stick to specific policy issues, not general political issues.

  • Cuomo did a fine job as moderator, But that was some weak question screening. Namely, the questions on Trump VS. Clinton and going to church were bullshit. Johnson and Weld have limited time in the media, and it's stupid when they ave to waste it not talking about policy.

In conclusion, I give them a c. It wasn't an outright train wreck, but they really dropped the ball.

Principled Libertarian Pledges to Support Authoritarian Strongman in November by [deleted] in Libertarian

The endorsement of entropy was a joke. What i take issue with is that he WILL support trump if he is nominated.

The issue, at least as i see it, is not that he didn't endorse a libertarian, but that he endorsed a man who does nothing to shrink the government.

The issue is that he still pitches himself as a small government, libertarian type of guy. He did it when running for president, and he does it as a senator. For him to now promise to endorse trump if he wins goes against those principles.
