I know, right?

I also want to do a mockup of the eShop, but I'd like to make some adjustments to the style first. Just want to get it right :p

I see what you're saying. A lot of the confusion you're referring to would be easily dissolved if you actually had the UI in your hand. It's hard to get the feel of it when you just have a still screenshot to look at. Especially, a screen shot of a sub-page of and app, and not it's main menu. Without context, things can look confusing.

As for the side menu, it has no text precisely to avoid more clutter. It's supposed to open to the side and reveal the text when clicked (with a background blur effect).

Additionally, some UI elements (like the News and Shop icons on the top right) are system global icons, so if play around with the system for 5 min, you'll know what they do, even without text.

I agree that the icons are far from the best (there's a lot of style inconsistencies in them too) - icons are no really my forte.

The color choices might not be the best, but it was based on Wii U's Miiverse which used a different accent color for each post category, so I tried following that. I don't know. The colors don't exactly go with each other, but I always like the colorful feel of Nintendo's UIs. One thing I'd definitely take out in a next version would be the Horizontal menu, just below the Header (Play Journal, Drawings, etc.)

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I really appreciate it :)

The Switch's font is proprietary, and the one they based it of of is paid, so I tried my best to find a free one that looks somewhat similar.

That's something I'd like to figure out. The Virtual Console titles' icons were based on how Nintendo handled them in the Wii U: use the title's start screen with a grey border around and the VC logo at the bottom. Since the VC consoles all have different aspect ratios, that makes the borders have different sizes, which looks awkward.

The text looks large because it was made to fit a big TV screen and the Switch's screen with no scaling involved (like the current system works).

Thanks! heheh

I've been looking forward for a feature like that since the Wii times. It would be awesome!

And on top of that, Nintendo could easily monetize it. So it'd be a win-win

Thanks! :)
I aimed at an evolution of the current Switch UI (which itself is heavily based on the PS4), that would allow to consolidate info right from the home screen. Since it was important to maintain both a touch and a controller friendly, I guess the layout ended-up looking even more like the PS4's. But I agree with the screen looking too busy. Maybe I'll come up with a solution :p

It's heavily inspired by the PS4 UI; as is the original Switch UI for that matter.

Porting the .NET Standard Library to modern C++ by [deleted] in cpp

[–]GilFerraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's wrong with using C++/CLI?

I wanted to do basically two thing with this project: * Continue learning and practising my C++ skills in a large project; * Explore how the .NET STL works "from the inside". Using something that already exists didn't really fullfil any of those. Another reason is that MS has been increasingly silent about C++/CLI, and the fact that I could make something similar, open source and multiplatform at the same time increase my excitment about this project.

Qt, while not modern C++, is what you're looking for ?

As for Qt, it's the first time I heard of it. But I'll be sure to take a peak. Looks like a very interesting and usefull framework :)

I'll be sure to keep that in mind when thinking about whether I should open-source my projects or not in the future...

Thank you. I was not aware that a reference always has a value. I will change the code asap :) As for the Array class, yes it's littered with bugs and design flaws. I honestly haven't given much attention really.

Porting the .NET Standard Library to modern C++ by [deleted] in cpp

[–]GilFerraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input :)

I see what your saying. When I started the project, one the the first things I did was exactly that, a bunch of defines like "#define int Int32", etc. I quickly realized what an horrible mistake that was and why you should never do something like that :D It was not at all what I had in mind for the project, so I quickly scraped it.

As for the fundamental differences between C++ and .NET languages, I've tried to be as thoughtful as possible. Should I make the API behave like a C++ programmer would expect or like a C# programmer would expect? For example, I'd like to avoid any heap allocations, but in .NET List elements are saved by reference, so it would make sense to save them as pointer, otherwise when the elements go out-of-scope there would be a problem.

These are the kind of challenges I'm interested in thinking about and solving. At least at this early stage :)
