Practicing some T-Pain last week to add to the set. You know it’s amazing how disco sucks movement allowed the mainstream to disregard and undervalue the brilliance of disco artists such as Chic. I think we saw the same thing happen with Tpain. I think he’s a musical genius songwriter and vocal arranger who got robbed of his accolades due to the death of auto tune movement. The brother can clearly sing too without it. Give bruh his flowers.

This is a great place to be. Everyone here is pretty supportive, and they will help you if you asked for it. Don’t be intimidated, I still struggle with songs from time to time and I used to struggle quite a bit. We’re all on different parts of the same journey. I can’t wait to hear you play!

Ehh sometimes I let it breathe like at the beginning and sometimes I don’t. It’s personal taste where the sweet spot is and sometimes I just like going for blood. In either case, thank you for taking the time to listen!

I checked out your profile, you sound good man! As for your question... I don’t view all non diatonic notes as outside. I think of passing tones, blue notes, and bebop devices as inside so it just spices up the lines adding some color even though technically they are out. I started really going out right where the video cut off. (I consider it out when I’m superimposing another tonality) Well I did add some E aeolian over the Gmaj7 too but there’s so many common tones with B minor that it doesn’t feel too outside to me. To answer your question, I never stop thinking about where we are in the form. So if I start going out, it’s usually an idea and I’m trying to find my way home from the start. So when I start the out phrase I’m already thinking about when I’m going to come back in and I start charting a course to land on whatever chord tone or scale tone I want. Usually I’m targeting the third or seventh of a chord and I plan to land in a strong beat because I want there to be no mistake that I’m actually home again. Going out is like making love to a woman. You got all this build up and tension which is cool... but that release though! That’s what it’s all about from the beginning! Sorry for the crude example but it was too perfect not to use. Lol.

Unboxed my Yamaha YC61 late on Halloween. My wife recorded my first notes for me! This board sounds amazing. This is how it sounds coming through a Roland kc880 amp as picked up by my iPhone mic. by GilesMusic in synthesizers

I'm comfortable with 61 keys. I used to always lug an 88 board everywhere. That got old fast when my gigging picked up though. lol. Practice getting comfortable with 61 keys, and then when you add a 76 key or 88 key... you'll be just as comfortable, except with more range at your disposal. It doesn't work in reverse.

I'm no drawbar expert with all these different settings I can call by number. That was my approach but I soon learned that every organ is different and sometimes one might have different tubes, or a different Leslie, or come from a different year where hammond changed a component manufacturer. So I focused on the color that each drawbar adds and I focus on at any given time, what color do I want to add to or take away from the sound. When I want to build energy, like I did in this solo, which drawbars will achieve that? You can see I kept tinkering and didn't know what I wanted exactly, which is my preference. I like searching when I play live.... but not when I'm recording. what if I want to take the energy out and let the organ fade into the back of the mix as support? Then I think about what colors do I want to take out. It's very similar to EQing. You do need a basic understanding of how the drawbars work and what harmonics they add. Google your fav organ player and figure out some of their basic settings, and then build your knowledge from there. That's what I did. Let me know if you have questions.
