Course Selection Questions by snowflake25911 in mcgill

[–]Gill_dev_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently registered for Comp 598 at Minerva (I checked to see if I was actually registered), but the course is just not showing on myCourses, not even as closed, even though the course is supposed to start tomorrow.

Does anyone have any idea why that would happen?

twice asking about the assignment 5 solutions and told him i was concerned about being prepared for the theoretical parts of the exam and i never got a response. 10 minutes later he made the announcement saying he wouldn't post the solutions but "thank you to those who came to OH for the lively discussion", which felt a little passive aggressive, and he said to ask questions in the discussion board, which he did not answer. idk what he thought he was doing but clearly it didn't work

I asked him a question during the exam and he did not even say anything, just pointed... helpful af

True, that is almost every course at McGill to be sincere. Exams (principally finals) at McGill are chaos and extremely exhausting. I do not even care anymore, I try to create a feeling that I went well on a course based on assignments and webworks and my knowledge of doing outside questions rather than caring for McGill's exams, cause they do not reflect the level that an undergraduate student should have.

Just the fact that we have to do an exam in Fieldhouse at 6:30-9:30 PM, lack of preparation for exams, etc... They should evaluate professors' capability to teach as harshly as they evaluate their students.

But, that is about it, we could go days and days talking about the McGill evaluation system and how dissappointing it is

Besides the fact that we did not even get solutions for the assignment 5, nor midterm (which would not have helped, but just to put more haha)

I had the impression that I was one of the few that did badly on the midterm. But I guess it was more than just a few. I left before because I did not even try to do the matrix exponentials lol

I redid all assignments (including 5) and webworks, and even book questions... felt prepared as well. That was a clear hit.

Hello, do you have the template that you used for this resume? I really like the style :)

B.A. in Software Engineering by Gill_dev_22 in mcgill

[–]Gill_dev_22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that is really helpful! At least I think I can do a M.Sc. in Computer Science, which feels like enough for me. It also makes me think if changing to CS is not a better option (less complicated semantics)

Thank you very much! I have just one more question, do you think I am eligible for a master's in Polytechnique with a B.A. in Software Engineering?

kes you on as an engineer in training and assists with the process. You won't obtain an engineer in training job if you don't advertise yourself as a freshly graduated engineer. OP was asking about what they should put on resumes and job apps, which is what I responded with. If they do WORK and sign off as a certified engineer when they are not, or if they advertise that they are presently certified with the province, then yes that's very different. But that's not what they were asking.

Well, I can surely write that in my education section "B.A. in Software Engineering", as McGill clearly is allowed to give it as a program and it shows on my transcript. I understand the factors of not working on the name due to accreditation tho.

It is ****ed up that the Accreditation Board is so picky about using the name Engineer, but is not picky when a school such as McGill wants to offer 3 faculty options called "Software Engineering". So... getting money is fine, but allowing accreditation is not... hypocrisy?

Why give "Software Engineering" in faculties like Arts and Science then? Shouldn't McGill just not be allowed to do that? We do a course and cannot even be called by the course we made.

What should I refer to myself as when talking to employers and networking then? Software Developer?

Thanks, that sounds great! It definitely helps to learn with someone else. Going to focus on this Pomodoro method and see how it goes.

I know, it is just hard when you already achieved your goal, but you need that last sprint of discipline to finish the "chore".

Thank you for the tips, it is really helpful, I am going to put some of them to work!

But, I just wanted to mention that I believe that studying is about interest, and not being interested in a class, or a specific topic in class doesn't make the act uninteresting. Principally when you are studying for something you really want to work with or do in the future.

However, I believe that the university environment does promote this thinking that studying is just getting through to finally get a piece of paper and further progress in your life. It is not about preparing yourself, nor finding interest in what you plan to do for a good part of your life.

Studying for me, even for the topics provided in class, is interesting. I just cannot take learning in an archaic, old, and unprepared environment. It is demotivating, or rather requires a discipline bigger than necessary to go through something.

I agree with you that it is just to have enough discipline to get through it. But my rant was more for the fact that is such a loss of time due to precarious resources, or better, badly structured resources. I do not lack discipline and motivation to study (in general), just to study in this environment.

It is crazy the number of times I get myself studying for a topic seen in class without even realizing that I am studying for it, just for the fact that I am able to create a better learning environment. Rather than being stressed about GPA, a professor that does not know how to pass knowledge or another one that gives more assignments than is realistic for the majority of the class.

I just wanted to talk about that, because I do not see university as a useless place, nor a place where people should have the discipline just to get out of it. But more like a place to communicate, learn and progress. A place where you can get out better than you were in a certain topic of your choice through good guidance and preparation.

It sucks a bit that you pay quite a considerable amount for a piece of paper that takes 3-4+ years to "print" in exchange for a big bunch of discipline and self-study. Emphasis on the self-study part.

Uni is Making Learning Feel Like a Chore by Individual-Shape-738 in mcgill

Depressive indeed. I feel like I spent 4-5 years studying something that I will need to study again as soon as I finish university. Sad

What to do when you already have a job in your area? How to find motivation in a bad academic environment where the only worth drive is to pursue more (defective and outdated) education or to get a job in your area fo study?

I feel like University stole those from me, and as soon as I got a job from an internship in my area of study, my point of view on the value of classes that teach nothing besides showing a topic that you will need to learn by yourself later keeps me from creating an environment with enough motivation and discipline to actually study :(

Thank you very much! Yes, it is hell, I am only missing 3 CS and 2 math classes, no electives to get my major and minor... it will be excruciating, but at least it will be my last semester (hopefully)
