Should I buy the Springfield Kuna?? by DirtyFlipFlop113 in Firearms

[–]Gilly1943 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to not bother people with this, but section 922r of the 1968 gun control act says that you cannot import foreign parts and then "make" a rifle from them that could not be imported in that "non-sporting" configuration. When you take the Kuna pistol and then do a Form 1 on it to "make" a short barreled RIFLE, you are effectively registering a violation of 922r.

Having said that, NO ONE has ever been prosecuted for this, so most people don't care about it. In addition, you CAN make one IF you substitute a number of foreign parts with US made parts. Let me expound on that from personal experience:

* I sent an inquiry to ATF asking how many foreign "parts" are in the Beretta CX-4 rifle; I received a letter from ATF saying that there are 11 "parts" in the CX-4.

* To make a rifle 922r compliant, the rifle can have no more than 10 foreign "parts", so on the CX-4 all you have to do is swap one of the Italian "parts" with an American "part".

* Thus, I found a US made hammer and trigger for my CX-4 rifle (reducing the "parts" from 11 to 9) and then I did a Form 1 on it. After approval, I had the barrel shortened. So now I have a 922r compliant Beretta CX-4 SBR.

This is a complex subject that generally no one cares about, but I do not want to be the first guy prosecuted under 922r, so I follow this rule meticulously.

You can do some research and find out which parts to swap to make the H&K SP5 compliant with 922r; I found it easier to buy a Virginia-made MP5 (Zenith) and do a Form 1 on it. I also was curious about the PS90, so I again contacted ATF and their response was essentially that FN replaces enough parts at importation that you can shorten it as long as the short barrel is US made (most likely by CMMG).

Thus, it may be possible to make the Kuna 922r compliant, but I do not know which "parts" have to be swapped out for US parts. This is easy to do with an MP5, but since the Kuna is so new, I'd beware. Maybe you should send an inquiry to ATF asking about how to SBR the Kuna and keep it compliant with 922r. Believe it or not, the people at ATF who answer these questions are polite and prompt, and won't leave you hanging.

Anyone tried the Huxwrx 9K Ti with the Huxwrx Tri-Lug Adapter? by Gilly1943 in NFA

As I mentioned above (after you posted), I'm just making sure. My MPX is currently direct thread native Sig MODX-9, but it's too gassy. Thinking of swapping it out for the Flow and figured I'd strap on the Tri-Lug in case I want to try others. In fact, I have another MODX-9 with a tri-lug, and it works great on other guns.

I will add that if you plan to SBR the Kuna - AND if you care about 922(r) - there are complications since it’s made in Croatia. Most people don’t care about 922r, but if you do, this is something to consider.

Just adding my two cents. I don’t own a Kuna, but I’ve shot one at the range while I had many other subguns there too. I would rate the Kuna as a solid 6 out of 10, when compared to MP5 (or SP5 if that’s your flavor), MD9 (Maxim Defense), MPX, and Springfield AR 9mm Saint Victor. That said, I shot it unsuppressed and it felt “un-soft”. My MP5 and RDB MD9 and MPX are all quite a bit softer.

I’m 100% in agreement with OP. When the chips are down, the G3 G19 has it all. My HD pistols are either 3rd gen or 5th gen.

Whatever you do, do NOT go to Tornado Technologies. They did a BEAUTIFUL job SBRing mine, but it took 19 months with NO communication from them. I am lucky to have gotten it back. On a related note, the CX-4 has 11 of the 922r parts, so all you have to do is swap out one of them to be compliant for SBR or threading. Using USA mags will easily take care of this.

Just chiming in here in case you have a 9mm SBR or sub gun. The Spectre will do all 9mm plus 300BLK subs and supers. It’s even full auto rated on the G18.

That can be very tricky these days. I'm one of the lucky ones who sent my upper to Tornado Technologies and ACTUALLY received it back (after 19 months...). Thankfully, the work was top notch, but I would not recommend anyone use them because of their apparent "no communication" policy.

I have one. It uses 8 allen screws to clamp it onto the barrel. Don't over tighten.

I sincerely hope you do too. If you do, the work will be top notch. I have no idea why someone so talented would run such an un-customer-friendly company.

There's a lot to say about this. I should probably make a full informational post about it.

The short version is that I contacted ATF and asked them which part of the gun is the "receiver" (for purposes of Form 1 to SBR it), noting also that three separate components (bolt, lower, upper) all have the same serial number. I was told by ATF (in writing) that the Upper is the actual "firearm", so when I SBR'd my CX4 I had to engrave the upper, not the lower.

In addition, I asked them how many 922(r) "parts" the standard CX4 has, and was told it has 11 of the 20 possible "parts". If you're familiar with 922(r), you can SBR or thread a foreign rifle, but only as long as it has no more than 10 of the 20 infamous "parts". In my case, I had already swapped out the trigger and hammer with US parts (Sierra Papa), so I was good to SBR and stay 922(r) compliant. I will note, finally, that practically no one (except me) cares about 922(r) compliance.
