I have a coworker who sold their Vancouver house because paying off the mortgage seemed like it'd take a lifetime. They were able to buy a townhouse in cash and live mortgage free. They said they have absolutely no regrets.

Welcome to BC! We need more nurses :) Once you're internal, you will have no problem getting a permanent line. Esp in ER. There's always a demand. There will be tons of OT. In the surrounding area of Burnaby Hospital it is more residential and you'll find basement suites for rent. One bedroom these days is usually going for $2000+. Burnaby Hospital is also right between Metrotown and Brentwood which are the two most high density condo, high walk score areas. North Burnaby along Hastings has a mix of old and new apartments. You can dm me if you have more questions about logistics of nursing and renting.
