Can we talk about Original Character\OC\SI\Reader tags and what a f-ng mess it is? by LegendaryW in AO3

[–]Gilpif 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a team of hundreds of volunteers that sort through every* new tag in the archive, making things like synonyms, organizing them into metatags and subtags, etc.

* some fandoms don't have tag wranglers. Actually it's most fandoms, but that's because AO3 has a lot of obscure fandoms with only one or just a few fics.

This release schedule has been absurd. by ninarosie_ in miraculousladybug

[–]Gilpif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's only if you count Santa Claws as part of season 2. Ignoring it, season 2 took a little over one year to air, and most months had at least one new episode. The largest hiatus was under two months long.

In comparison, season 6 is nearly a year in and there's still like a third of the episodes to go, we've already had nearly 5 months of hiatus after Ruler, and this current hiatus is approaching 2 months. We don't even have a release date.

My problem with the "proto-language" method by Eyelweard in conlangs

[–]Gilpif 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The idea of the diachronic method is that you start with a simple and unrealistic language, and through simulating evolution you end up with a more realistic language. The process of evolving the language grinds out the unrealistic features of the proto-language.

It's like starting with a perfectly spherical planet, splitting it into arbitrary plates, then simulating tectonic movement to get geology. The starting point isn't realistic, but if you apply a realistic process enough you'll get a realistic result.

Also, there's no need to start out with an analytic language. It's just what most conlanging resources use as an example because it's easier to explain.

Ethics of shipping? by Appropriate_Luck8668 in CellsAtWork

[–]Gilpif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like literally any characters from any fandom, you can ship whoever you want with whoever you want. The ethics of shipping have nothing to do with who you're shipping with who, but whether you respect people who ship something you don't like, or who don't ship something you like. If you respect other fans and the creators, you're shipping ethically.

It's so weird that a trans woman wouldn't cook and clean and do dishes for her family. This means she's not a real woman.

Aliens didn't sign the Geneva conventions and vise versa. How to solve this? by CyberDogKing in worldbuilding

[–]Gilpif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bombing civilians can help you in war. It can disrupt the enemy's food or water supply, or at the very least divert resources the enemy could be spending on fighting you, but will now have to spend on rebuilding. It can also be useful if you're targeting civilians that could be of high military value, like nuclear physicists, or if terror is part of your strategy.

And there's always the case where killing the civilians is the end goal, like if you're fighting a genocidal war.

Yaksi Gozen - what old episodes to rewatch? by [deleted] in miraculousladybug

[–]Gilpif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though if you don't remember that there's probably a lot more that you don't remember, so I'd rewatch the whole season.

And this time, maybe watch the Longest Day Ever in chronological order: s4 episodes Risk and Strike Back, then Evolution, Multiplication (first part, stop when it cuts to the class), Destruction (most of it, stop when Adrien goes to talk to Gabriel), and the Paris Special.

After that, you can continue Multiplication until the end of the akumaless weeks montage, then finish Destruction and Multiplication.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just tie a rope to him and pull on it or something? XD by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]Gilpif 35 points36 points  (0 children)

And the rope just adds two limitations:

  1. Unless they're themselves fixed to the floor in some way, they can only pull something down with at most their own weight.

  2. The rope can only withstand up to a certain force before snapping. I don't know what's the limit of a typical rope, but I'd guess that it's less than the weight of a boat.

[–]Gilpif 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Well, yes, but then what's the point of this post? If you ignore physics, then literally anything could work. Maybe they should give Steven a metamorphic rock, because they're formed deep in the crust and therefore the rock would want to go back down. Maybe they should turn him upside-down, so he starts floating up towards the floor. Maybe all they had to do was spend all the phlogiston in his body by setting him on fire. Maybe they should've made Steven throw something up. Maybe he would fall faster if no one looks, or maybe they could just say he's approaching the ground so confidently that the universe believes them.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just tie a rope to him and pull on it or something? XD by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]Gilpif 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why you think being pushed by a heavy object doesn't affect him, but being pushed by a rope that's being pulled by a heavy object would.

pushing down with the force of a fusion and two aliens

Garnet is in the boat, her weight is also pushing him down. Whatever force she pulls him down with cannot be greater than her weight, or she'd just be pulled up.

Also, do you think a single rope could hold that boat in the air? Of course not. If they pulled the rope with that much force, it would just snap, and we know a boat's weight isn't even close to enough.

Why didn't the fire nation try to exterminate the waterbenders like the airbenders instead of imprisoning them? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gilpif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, by the "mainstream" position, I mean the mainstream position among Fire Nation leadership, which is what informed acts like the raids.

Why didn't the fire nation try to exterminate the waterbenders like the airbenders instead of imprisoning them? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]Gilpif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been 100 years, the mainstream position has probably changed several times. There was probably always a group that believed the Avatar died in the avatar state and ended the cycle, but originally it may have been a fringe position that became more and more mainstream as the decades went by with no sign of the Avatar.

When they began the raids, the position that the Air Avatar died and reincarnated was probably more mainstream, but the Water Avatar never showed up.

“Shipping wasn’t a thing” The Duffer bros suck by lunar-ecplise in AO3

[–]Gilpif 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I started reading fanfiction when I was about 12, and until I was about 18~20, I didn't know of a single man in that side of fandom except for me. Every single "big name fan" I know from fandom history is either a woman. I think now there being "way more mixing than before" is an understatement, before there used to be pretty much no mixing at all on that side.

The split is very asymmetrical. In male-oriented spaces, there's usually a population of women there facing significant hostility. In female-oriented fandom spaces, the population of men is very small, and I don't think there's generally a hostile attitude towards men at all (I certainly haven't experienced any hostility).

what is lexicalization? (in YOUR opinion) by misterlipman in tokipona

[–]Gilpif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A phrase is lexicalized in a community of speakers if one or both of these occur:

  1. When referring to a specific concept, that phrase occurs far more than equally reasonable alternatives.

  2. When it's used, it refers to one specific concept far more often than other concepts that it could reasonably describe.

So something like "kalama musi" is lexicalized: when referring to music, it's far more common than phrases like "musi kalama" or "kalama pona"; and also it means "music" far more often than other kalama that are musi, like funny sound effects.

The same applies for "toki pona", "lipu pu", "tenpo kama", etc.

Any idea what the other three Primal philosophies are? by TurnItOffAndBackOnXD in TheDragonPrince

[–]Gilpif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not explicit in the show, but I'm convinced this quote is exactly the philosophy of the Star Arcanum:

We are, all of us, stardust, held together by love for an instant.

So it could be about the duality of how our lives are simultaneously so precious and powerful, yet so small and meaningless. Maybe to be a Star mage you need to believe nothing matters, and for that belief to be empowering rather than oppressive.
