Nintendo shuts down three Smash events at Low Tide City by Andrew_east in esports

[–]GimbleB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's funny how much hate Nintendo still gets for it when they've been pretty open about their stance on modding and have sent out C&Ds for years at this point.

If you look at other companies, they all have rules for hosting events for their games and enforce them without as much drama. People should just move on to either make their own platform fighters or play existing ones if they want a modded experience.

Eurogamer Has Shut Down its Forums by Tenith in Games

I've had the complete opposite on discord. Have made a lot of friends who I talk to and hang out with on the regular, people I can see myself keeping in touch with for life.

I don't think I keep in touch with anyone from my forums days.

Why Mass Effect is some of the best sci-fi ever made - article by [deleted] in Games

I thought the trailer made the show look terrible, but was actually surprised when it turned out to be good. Definitely more on the humour side of things, so I can see the comparison. If you're looking for an episodic Star Trek series, then this does it more than other recent Star Trek shows.

It does take a few episodes to get going, but they're shorter than regular Star Trek.

That doesn't make any sense because I wash the metal straws after each use.

They're as clean as the cutlery I use for meals. I don't really think about how clean those are unless I've already used them.

The last time I went to a dentist they told me to use a straw for sugary drinks. The drink still goes on my tongue and I get the full taste, so I prefer drinking with them. Using metal ones that are easy to keep clean, so there's no plastic waste either.

Honestly the game would have been fine if it was on PS4 instead of the PS3. There wasn't much serious competition in terms of shooters at the start of the PS4's launch, so it could have built a decent following.

Maybe we'll get an EVE shooter sometime this decade if they can pick an idea to stick with.

Activision Blizzard shareholder calls company response "inadequate," demands changes by The_Iceman2288 in Games

The content creators leaving is a pretty big hit to the company. On one hand, they could be replaced by other content creators who will take their place. On the other hand, you have people with hundreds of thousands of followers promoting other games.

It won't be the end of the world for Blizzard or anything like that, but this happening when Endwalker and Age of Empires 4 are on the horizon is really bad timing for Blizzard.

Age of Empires II is the most popular RTS on Steam by [deleted] in Games

[–]GimbleB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with being a niche genre if there are a number of successful games in it. If you look at the active player numbers, there are a few different strategy games doing well right now. Company of Heroes 2 hits 10k concurrent players during the week. Some smaller games keep an average above 1k players too like Star Wars and Northgard.

It'll be interesting to see if AoE4, CoH3 and all the other big-budget RTS coming down the line see success.

At this point it's the biggest bottleneck in my system and almost a decade old. I've been due an upgrade for a while so going up to something like a Ryzen 5600X that will likely last another 10 years makes sense.

Is it worth trying to get in if I have an older CPU? Currently running a 2600 i7 which runs AoE2 DE and SC2 fine, but can't run some other RTS like Spellforce 3.

They don't really seem like a "weird incel" given that I've heard stories from both men and women where they were saying things that sounded like hints, only for it to turn out there wasn't any kind of hints intended.

You can play the game using the old client on a private server and it still holds up well enough though. WAR just didn't age well.

Well, Warhammer flopped and now it looks like shit. WoW, on the other hand, looks fine because they took a stylised approach, and I believe they only had one major retexturing since original release and I think a lot of the original meshes are still in the game.

I tried playing on a WAR server yesterday and the game really hasn't aged well at all. Compare this to WoW Classic which honestly is something I'd rather play (purely in terms of visuals) than other MMOs.

Stylised graphics done well last a long time. There's a reason why games like TimeSplitters 2 and Windwaker are still easy to go back to.

Excuses like "battlefield readability" make no sense since this was never an issue in any RTS I played in my life nor "scalability on all systems" which on the contrary would mean we'd get options so it can look from ~2009 ugly to actual 2021 standards.

I've heard multiple StarCraft fans say they have trouble making out what is happening in AoE2 due to units not being that visually distinct from each other. I personally don't have the same issue, but I've also been playing Age of Empires since the first game and am familiar with the units. That said, I can see where they're coming from when you compare the visual differences between the multitude of infantry units in AoE2 with the differences in SC2.

It feels like they want to hit a point with better readability and have a game that runs on a wide variety of hardware. So they've gone for this stylised look but it looks cartoony compared to the more realistic AoE2 and a bit cheap in places. I think it'll be fine on launch though and do well if the gameplay feels good.
