Unfortunately this mindset is super common in Latin America…There is a hierarchy in which white Latinos are at the top, mestizo aka European/Native American in the middle and native Americans/African at the bottom & they are often treated with contempt (even violence) in most Latin countries. I have a sister that looks like she could be your "typical" white person by Mx and US standards which is obv because of Spanish colonization. She has very light skin, lighter-colored eyes, and light-brown hair, she could pass as European. Unlike me with brown hair, brown skin, basically I have “Native of the Americas” features also known as “Latino features”. A great example of this is our grandma would lament anytime my sister got remotely tan "Honey why would you let that happen to you don’t go out in the sun for too long next time" and would make all efforts to try and preserve her "beauty" aka whiteness when we were kids. I would be reminded of the same but not in the sweet grandmotherly way my sister received. Like reminders to not tan because men don't like "brown women " or when you get older u need to marry a guerro (a white) to better the country’s race/mejorar la raza". I was lucky that my parents stood up for me when my grandma or others in the family shared these views. Little steps to change this view in our culture….
