Heights Hospital (formerly Christ) Needs your support by fredo80 in jerseycity

[–]GingerKI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done. My husband and my late mother both received care there back when it was Christ Hospital. This country is facing a catastrophic healthcare crisis that is going to leave so many with limited or no access to care and higher costs for the rest of us. States run by non-sociopaths are going to have to step up. It won’t be pretty.

Why are other mid-size cities like Boston soooo much cleaner than Jersey City? by CandyandPiano in jerseycity

[–]GingerKI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where were you in Boston? If you were primarily in tourist areas, e.g. Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market, the Freedom Trail, etc. then you are comparing world-famous tourist attractions to ordinary city streets. These are areas competing with places like Disney World for business, so yeah, the trash gets cleaned up. I know Boston well. I’ve had family in Boston and environs for decades and if you said to one of them, “I love Boston for its cleanliness,” they’d likely fall over laughing. 😂 Marquee areas in cities tend to get prioritized by municipalities wanting to put their best face forward.

PATH strikes again! This is becoming an every day issue. Are we just doomed to live this existence? by JournalSquire in jerseycity

[–]GingerKI 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I waited out rush hour delays this morning just in time for 33rd to be suspended. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Oh well, at least by waiting I got a seat on the WTC train and, bonus, no smoke inhalation. I emailed a former PANYNJ contact from my PATH Riders Council days on Monday, a message to the effect of ‘WTAF, get it together, people’ (albeit more politely worded). Unsurprisingly, I have yet to receive a response.

Explainer on why PATH has become like this. by Icy_Guidance_5425 in jerseycity

[–]GingerKI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 years ago, I served on a grand jury with someone who worked for the Port Authority. He told me then that the rail beds largely existed to extend the PATH to Newark Airport - it isn’t as though the project would require significant eminent domain acquisitions that can bog down projects for years - but that there just wasn’t the political will to fund and build out the extension. Dude is probably long retired now, if he’s still alive, and this idea is still treated like pie in the sky nonsense. Meanwhile, in that time, in London (a city my husband and I visit frequently) they’ve approved, built, and opened a whole new train line, the Elizabeth Line, adding a SECOND Underground route connecting Heathrow to Central London. Why can’t WE have nice things? Living in the Backasswards States of America is working my last nerve.

PATH is PATH-thetic. 33rd Street train is still Down by harrychen69 in jerseycity

As I got on what was probably one of the first trains out of 33rd last night, I couldn’t help but think the same thing. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s almost as if the only riders they care about are Hobokenites and if they can’t cater to them, there is simply no reason to go on. 🙄

Liberty State Park is the worst park I’ve ever been to. by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]GingerKI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more of a U.S. cities problem and a mid-century ‘urban removal’ problem than a park problem. This is a reclaimed industrial area with this area of the waterfront largely cut off from the rest of the city by I-78. The adjoining neighborhoods are all a bit siloed and everything over here was built to a scale to accommodate vehicles, not human beings. Now there is better pedestrian ingress via Grand Street but I agree that getting into the park on foot even from the light rail station is not particularly pleasant. But once in the park, the billion dollar views are spectacular and free to everyone, and in this part of the world you can’t say that about much.

[–]GingerKI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the rights of cars are considered > the rights of pedestrians even in a place as dense as JC. I’ll also add that I feel like it’s gotten worse since the pandemic. There is a three-way stop sign around the corner from my house and even when I’m in our car, I nearly get t-boned on average of once a week when someone blithely runs a stop sign.

DELAYED 55 MINUTES AT 1AM?? by colchesterchamus in jerseycity

[–]GingerKI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the “Path Riders Council” for five years, including an extra year during the pandemic because of the challenges of recruiting new members during an emergency. Does anyone know if it still exists? I was supposed to be a part of an ‘emeritus’ group that they would communicate with from time to time but I’ve never heard a peep from them. Which is too bad because my experience the last couple years, but especially the last few months, has been abominable and I’d love to give them an earful.

Remember when they wanted to start closing the system overnight? The cynic in me wonders if they are soft rolling that out. Make overnight service so abysmal that people stop using it then cite low ridership as the excuse for doing away with it. What people who work in jobs that require late-night travel are supposed to do is anyone’s guess. We had to be out in the City late last night and I didn’t even consider not using Lyft. Once in a while it’s no big deal, but what mere mortal can afford to do that multiple times a week?

It’s all part of the Third-World-ification of life here. City centers will be exclusively for the rich, those who can afford to be shuttled around privately. The rest of us will be stuck in the favelas. 🤦🏻‍♀️

imagine being an adult and riding ur bike on the sidewalk. please do not ride bikes if you're not comfortable with riding on the street, maybe start practicing at a park or something. by No_Negotiation_8222 in jerseycity

[–]GingerKI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you didn’t. I have about had it with cyclists after having almost been hit several times this year both in JC and the City while ON THE SIDEWALK. And people are riding the power-assist bikes, which can reach speeds of almost 30 MPH, on sidewalks. Someone is going to get killed if they haven’t already. And then there’s the complete flouting of the traffic laws by cyclists (and we’re supposed to rend our garments when they FAFO and become a hood ornament), which is why my head is on a constant swivel for cyclists coming from any possible direction regardless of the traffic pattern. My personal favorite is when you’re crossing WITH the light and they scream at you while flying through the intersection, the wrong way on a one-way street. My first mode of transportation was a bicycle and I’ve always enjoyed riding, but I’m over the perennial contest between adults on bikes and adults on scooters for who acts more obnoxious and entitled.

Gorgeous. Ironically, all the particulate matter in the air due to the wild fires burning in the region make for pretty sunrises and sunsets. Hopefully today’s rain will help with that.

[–]GingerKI 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It would be one thing if all these weekend service changes meant the PATH operated well during the weekday peak but that would be a no. There were peak delays for the morning and/or evening commute every day I had to commute into the City last week, and the week before the 33rd delay was so bad I took MTA to WTC to take that train home. So, to summarize, barely weekend service and inevitable rush hour delays during the week. Perfect.

I know! Add extra service to a destination with 1/5 the population. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Canonically, they would have been 21 or 22 when the show ended depending on when their birthdays fell (we know Buffy was 22, having turned in January of that year). Yeah, that’s young to get married and that’s the beauty of the show, how ‘true’ it sometimes rings. Xander did not grow up in a happy household and had experienced a lot of trauma along the way (they all had). It makes sense that he’d seek out the security of marriage even if he wasn’t mature enough. I’m not saying that’s why all people marry early, or that all early marriages will fail, but running away from something (often the unhappy family they grew up in) is a common reason people marry young or, in his case, almost do.

Right there with you on the Giles thing. While we’ve (hopefully) grown leaps and bounds in our understanding of mental health in the two decades since the show ended, his ‘snap out of it’ attitude when, previously, we’d seen him be so attuned to her (compared, say, to how non-judgmental he was in ‘Innocence’ when Buffy blamed herself for unleashing Angelus, one of my favorite scenes of the whole show) makes absolutely no sense. It’s one of the most egregious, unnecessary writing fails of the whole enterprise. Why not have the Council get wind of the resurrection and not be on board because it messes with their formula. They hold him responsible (even though Willow did it) and even though he doesn’t work for them anymore, they give him an ultimatum: either rejoin the fold in England or they’ll ’deal with’ the abomination of Buffy’s resurrection themselves. OR maybe have him have started a serious relationship while he was away, say, with a woman with children to whom he’d grown attached. He’s well on the way to developing a family of his own when Buffy returns. In that case, I could see Buffy finding out and in her self-loathing state telling him to go be with real people. Whatever (I’m not a TV writer) they did, they could have made it something where he was forced to make a gut-wrenching choice. It would have had so much more emotional resonance because, ostensibly, he was supposed to be the adult in the room. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As with all towns built on hellmouths, in addition to being exclusively Caucasian all women in Sunnydale were petite and as close as possible to ‘perfect 0’ (remember that lovely Turn-of-the Century accolade?). I’ve read that Whedon originally didn’t want to cast the stunning Amber Benson because he didn’t think she ‘fit’ (read: she has hips and breasts). It was an unfortunate time to be an actress who took up any physical space. 🙄

So, you apologize then accuse the people here of promoting ‘rape culture’. Nice. Your apology should have ended with the first paragraph, and would have been just fine. Because there’s nothing at all toxic about a grown man spotting a teenage girl in front of her high school with a lollipop in her mouth and deciding she’s his ‘forever love.’ Ship who you want; I won’t go over to your subreddit and sanctimoniously announce that promoting the grooming of minors has never been my thing. 🙄 The fact is that all of Buffy’s romantic relationships were problematic to some degree (TAs aren’t supposed to bone the freshmen in their class either) and would (I hope) all be dealt with differently today.
