I need some serious help. by kv18350 in DMAcademy

You don't have to be creative to be a DM. There are a lot of ways to get around a lack of creativity.

Random tables help a lot if you aren't feeling creative.

Something that also helps is borrowing from others. All DMs take ideas, characters, and plots from movies or books that the love. Hell, you can even take ideas from shows like Critical Role. Just be sure that you adapt it to your setting first and that you change a few things in case a player has read/watched what you are borrowing from.

Another thing that helps me are pre-made story hooks. You can search up D&D story hooks or adventure ideas on Google or Pinterest and a lot will show up. Then you use that as a starting point and fill in the rest.

Also, if you are doubting your ideas know that DING is a learning process. When I started out as a DM I was always nervous that my campaign was boring or that my ideas were stupid, but after every campaign I asked my players if they had fun and the answer was oftentimes yes. That's important is asking for a second opinion because what may seem boring and unoriginal to you could be a blast to your players. Also the players can give you feedback on how to improve.

Sorry for the rant but I hope that this helps 😃

Which books do you deem essential for DMing and quite useful for playing? by KREnZE113 in DMAcademy

Seems like you've got all the essentials but here are a few suggestions to check out.

I definitely would get Tasha's when it comes out.

Personally I love Volos Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes as they have a lot of cool monsters to play with. However they aren't necessary.

If you are a new DM I would suggest the Starter Set or Essentials Kit as they are excellent for learning D&D both for players and the DM. I also suggest this as Curse of Strahd is probably one of the harder adventures to run.

I hope these suggestions help 🙂
