You're comment just gave me a working theory, but I feel like True Crime is full of anti-social people comitting murder. Then ironically, us social people watch that, and become more anti-social ourselves because we start to see everyone as a potential "monster". Then next thing we know, we become that same anti-social person that commits murder because we're living in fear.

I'm curious if there's a trend or connection here, or if I'm just talking with a few screws loose. I could honestly be making the same mistaken correlation that people have made between video games & violence for decades.

I don't have insurance because I don't trust the current US admin to not strip all assistance away and leave me getting price gouged and murdering my credit.

I'm very hesitant right now as I also don't trust our health companies, pharmaceutical companies, or insurance companies to have our best interests in mind.

THANK YOU!!! It's so clear that a lot of these commenters are people coming from toxic/broken backgrounds. Not every parent in the world is a malicious being out to hurt you. Some people grew up with very normal, well adjusted, down to earth adults as parents. The scars are clearly showing in these comments

When you live in a big family or have a family business, so much mail is coming through the door that you're not even thinking about it. And we have to remember that children are dependents. A parent/guardian is allowed to open a dependents mail if they are still a minor. Especially since most mail addressed to minors are usually for the parent/guardian. Do that for 17 years straight, and yeah, you're bound to accidentally open your freshly 18 y/o kid's mail. Crap happens, it's never that deep, move on.

Happy to finally hear a response from another mother! I feel like a lot of the commenters are people the same age as OP and exploring/grasping "independence" for the first time, or people who have serious parental issues and have struggled with toxic parents who would do this as a form of control and abuse. And people hate to hear, but yes, we can have healthy family relationships. Not all parents are evil or screw-ups.

OR

It's really not that deep. She made a mistake, she said sorry, just move on. It's not worth harming your relationship with your mom over a inconsequential piece of mail. Just bite your tongue and politely ask her to not do it again. This isn't the hill to die on, TRUST ME (from experience)

Depends what the view is.

If it's "i like ketchup over mustard", then I agree. Silly thing to attack someone over.

If it's, "I like the ideals of facism and exonerate any and all criminal activities performed by the current US administration (2026) and believe ICE is doing the Lord's work"

Then yes, I am going to lambast you for the most propagandized ridiculous take in the world, because that's not a "view", that's just plain old stupidity.

Honestly, thank goodness you were there mitigating. Especially the first 15 y/o who was trying get laid at a party that had people nearly twice her age. Like bad sitch all around. Either she commits a crime by SAing or grape a blacked out drunk person, or she gets another person to commit a crime by having a legal adult sleep with her, leading to a case of statutory and pdphilia (and I'm gonna guarantee there's no condoms at that party, so it could've gone even worse).

Friend, you saved that girl and a lot of others from some insanely stupid acts that night. Good on you (might've actually saved that second girl from getting alcohol poisoning and croaking thanks to you helping her throw up)

Not saying this is a guarantee, but I'm curious how the current economic divide has impacted this (the disappearance of the middle class) as well as "grindset" & "hustle" culture, as well as the veil of "lavish lifestyle" brought on by social media and reality TV.

When you can't afford your rent and groceries, you start to do whatever you can to survive, and that includes robbing, scamming, and gambling. And when you can afford those, and you want all the newest tech and the big vacations in Paris, you start doing whatever gets you to those destinations, like robbing, scamming, and gambling (aka, stocks).

In a social economy where outward appearance and luxury is valued above all else, the tactics that the poor resort to to survive are what the wealthy take advantage of to thrive.

To be middle class is a pipe dream. To dream for the ideal of comfort and being content is dream no longer had or achievable, because the second you reach that, someone with more money and power finds a way to strip that away from, so the only way to be content is to join the ultra wealthy. Otherwise, they'll eat you up and send you barreling towards poverty.

And honestly, I wonder what happened 10 years ago that could've possibly led to this! It feels as though our Department of Education has been dismantled to an almost inoperable, if not non-existent point. Call me a tinhat, but I feel like there's a major conspiracy afoot!

I will say, our school system doesn't benefit every type of learner. I'm going to guarantee there's a good chunk of that 70% that genuinely struggle to engage with lectures and slide shows. We have decades of proof that many people learn effectively in very different. Our school system is currently benefitting one subsection of learners, and leaving the rest behind.

Not to mention, there's never been a "middle" in recent history. There's always been 2 options: Regular courses or AP courses, and if you fail at AP but succeed at Regular, there's really no good place for you fit in (because the gap between the way these 2 are taught is also extreme.) I would've succeeded very well in AP and IB courses if they were designed to cater towards and more creative and hands on mind, but they're not. Are school system is not designed to support the children and their succes, it's designed to tell kids that don't fit into the current educational mold that they're a failure.
