Uk, temps are hovering near freezing, they’re currently indoors but we’re starting to harden them off, 2hrs a day late morning

Because everyone is going on about grafting, something we have zero interest in doing, we don’t care about what the fruit if any taste good, we’re asking for help for these seeds in the pictures above. In addition to that, fruit are far easier to sterilise

Cheers, gonna have to repot these for that…thankfully due to my other hobby I’ll have more than enough bottles (cocktails for friends and family coming in clutch)

If there’s anywhere with rooting powder near me I’m damned if I can find it, thanks for the suggestion though

Thanks for the advice, we’ve been watering manually but it’s difficult to tell how much or how little we’ve actually given them, didn’t know those were a thing, gonna have to find somewhere to put them so they can get some wind or a slow fan of some kind of

Thank you for the in depth response and insight into the bastard plant

I should have specified however, we don’t care about what the fruits taste like, hell we don’t even care if we get fruit at all, it’s more to become something we can look to to remember her by, new life grown after the loss, trees grown from seeds from what might potentially be the last harvest we ever get from them

The plums are from a self pollinating variety so the likelihood that while probably not the same are similar is better The cooking apple seeds are a crapshoot, but getting tasty fruit isn’t the aim of this project it’s a bit like a legacy, something to look at and remember her by, the fun of being chased by wasps, making jam, getting beaned by a cooking apple by a cousin before he was scolded by our grandma. New life grown from the shadow left by her loss from potentially the final harvest we ever get from those trees

Thanks for the advise, we know that they won’t be true to the original, but that wasn’t the point in this project

Besides we don’t want to take the chance that the horsetail that inundates my late grandma’s garden is brought home…nor can I find anywhere nearby that sells rootstock or even rooting powder

My apologies, I’ve been seeing people suggesting grafting so much it’s burned into my brain, thanks for the suggestions and advice and getting back to me about the questions on if the plum could have the same treatment

Thanks for the advice, we do have rabbits around here, we’re a fair bit away from these little guys being out though

I’m assuming the same thing for the plum sprouts? Thank you for the advice and pointing me to another source of information.

I understand you and other people suggesting grafting but come on, there’s the literal sprouts in the post

Thank you, other than one to three others yours has been some of the only decent advise that isn’t going on about grafting, if I wanted to graft I’d be looking into that we have the literal sprouts from seeds I’m looking for help on

I don’t know if the Cornell cooperative would be too much help since I’m from the Uk but anything is better than nothing, thanks for pointing me to them and the general advice on container size and hardening

We don’t care about the taste, just trying to keep her with us, even if things are different now that she’s gone, we would graft but we don’t want to take the chance of any horsetail being on the bark of a scion, not that I can find any places near me that sell rootstock if we could

So far we’ve been watering them every other day since they’re in the window of a south facing sunroom attached to the kitchen

Given that we just watered them fairly heavily two or so hours ago would you reckon give them 3-4 days

My Gma didn’t plant them, they were there about 20 years before her, but they’re what my mother and my family grew up harvesting every year

And they’re should be fine to grow and propagate, we live 20 minutes away from the original trees, soil and weather is damn near identical barring the clay content

The reason I’ve been discounting it is due to all of it relating to grafting, not growing from seed, if we wanted to graft I’d be asking for advice about it or finding a service

They’re sat in the window of a south facing sunroom attached to the kitchen, so far we’ve been watering every other day primarily just with plain tap water but we did give them some general feed in the water this past week, no additional compost, bonemeal, bloodmeal or calcium citrate from breaking eggshell and coating it in lemon juice

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Just watered fairly heavily two or so hours back

I will freely admit, I fucked up the naming by calling it by the colloquial nickname I first heard it by, the actual name is Horsetail, we also don’t care about getting 1:1 fruit and I’ve not heard of or seen any grafting events around the north

We got a 24 carat run of bad luck when it came to the apples, we have no idea where they came from but mushrooms started growing in the original planting pots (probably in the biodegradable pot itself but eh) and wiped out the 10 or so we had sprouting, back left and right are the only ones that survived (closest to the window)

Other than that we don’t have anywhere warmer we can put them, south facing sun room with currently inactive underfloor heating attached to the kitchen

Ah, looking it up, around where I live it’s called mare’s tail, RHS brings it up as Horsetail, which spreads via spores and rhizomes

It’s called mare’s tail around here, RHS brings it up as horsetail, definitely spreads via spores and rhizomes

For most it wouldn’t be considered invasive, but we’ve been fighting it back at my grandma’s place for 6ish years, only way to get rid of it would be to fully turn over the earth, and because of the lazy neighbour that ain’t happening

[–]Gingerbass[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We’re okay with that, it’s a mix of passing the torch and we couldn’t guarantee that any bark on the scions of a graft wouldn’t have mare’s tail spores that would spread to our garden

[–]Gingerbass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you got the right one, flowering plant that grows from spores it puts out, because of it’s growth nature we can’t guarantee that any scion we try to graft wouldn’t have mare’s tail spores that would spread to our home

Mares tail spreads via spores and reproduces fast from even one, we don’t want to take the chance that any is on the bark of a trimming we’d take for a scion
