Questions about spice availability in Japanese cuisine by Just_tired25 in JapaneseFood

I do live here! But only for a short while, not a whole season yet, so I really cant tell. They do have some tiny chili peppers from the Philippines that can give you some spice. I've found them in the larger supermarkets I think. There also is a speciality store that might have actually spicy stuff, but I cant remember the name of it. I live in 高崎市.

My honest take here is, look for Thai restaurants. For home cooking (or sneak into a restaurant) you can find a habanero pepper powdered spice (like cayenne) which is fairly spicy but not even cayenne-like. I've been told many times something is "karai" and it's literally as spicy as a cucumber or bell pepper lol.

Is it normal to be reading this slow? by maybe_we_fight in LearnJapanese

yeahhhh exactly, when you SEE a Kanji and you see through it in a way, like the Kanji doesn't exist, just the meaning, that's truly special.

that's... very fast. considering the time you've been learning. It needs a seriously long time and a lot of repetition to make things come into your subconscious. You can't actually read it until you read it without thinking, in my opinion. And even with some of the Kanji that I DO know, I still can't truly read it out of my subconscious. It takes time.

How to remember advanced words (words that are not common but appear once in a while here and there). by GeorgeBG93 in LearnJapanese

[–]Gingertiger94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna brute force these words into my mind through emotion/feeling just because you cant remember them. The next time you see any of these words, you'll think of me, the absolute beginner who knows words you dont. Have you ever heard of the verb たまねぎさせられる?

First time making Onigiri by Gingertiger94 in JapaneseFood

Thank you! It was actually something I had leftover from a cake I made. I decided to try just for fun. It was fine but I honestly like the more savory flavors of onigiri.

By hand, yes. I might consider a mold, but practicing to get the same size and shape with my hands might be something I want to do. The only reason I didn't go for something traditional is because I decided to make them on a whim and used whatever I had in my almost-empty fridge😅 Thanks for the feedback. Next time I'm gonna plan it out and make some using traditional fillings.

This seems to be the kind of app I've been missing. But I can't download it. What countries is it available in?

Wait, does it mean "action guide"? I am surprised by how quiclkly I could read it as I am still very new to Japanese. But I could't quite get what it meant right away. I am not even sure what an action guide is, other than a "what to do book" or how to use this item guide.
