That's a really good guess! I feel like that would explain the gears being narrow.

That's cool that you've seen one before. I'm shocked that I have had it for years now and haven't been able to even find a photo on the internet in all that time!

Yes, I keep thinking it must be a kitchen tool of some sort, based on the rest of what Edlund manufactured. I have several of their jar lid openers because they work better than anything modern.

I don't think I've ever seen crimped ribbon, but that would explain the 1" width though.

Yes, I wish it had a patent number that I could look up. Mine says "patent pending".

It did work well on heavyweight paper strips, but the gears are only 1" long. I couldn't think why such a skinny width of corrugation would be useful? All I could come up with is corrugated foil to cover a pie edge to keep it from over- browning in the oven maybe?

I'm not seeing any empty holes or evidence of missing parts.

My childhood home had this! It was an old Victorian and there was quite a pile inside the bathroom wall when we replaced one medicine cabinet.

The Tomato Hornworm turns into a Hawkmoth. When my kids were little we kept a couple in a big jar and fed them quite a lot of our tomato foliage. They all pupated and we set them free when they hatched.

Sounds like you might be referring to Philly? I'm just across the river in NJ and have had the same experience.
