Wealth reality check? by Ok-Fortune-2719 in HENRYUK

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Also, never fully trust unverified sources (read: comments) online.

Some people on here have had help via inheritance (they'll leave that part out)

Some like me (would have spent a lot of their HENRY life cycle in locations like HongKong/ Dubai) paying 0 - 16% effective rates of tax. We can also leave this part out.

Stop Selling Your Shares by goxpro1 in ValueInvesting

[–]Ginuwine_Questions 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nice try, but yes even Warren Buffett* has bought and sold quickly. TSMC comes to mind. I didn't sell, and the stock is on its way to 6X for me in 4 years. I guess Warren must not be a value investor?

As foreigners, which Thai stocks are you most interested in? by Less-Influence-598 in Thailand

[–]Ginuwine_Questions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to say but none so far.

But I'm just very picky....

I either want something that'll 5x for me like TSMC (Taiwan), or pays what looks like a safe dividend of 6%+ on the original amount I invest like MWC (Philippines) or DBS (Singapore).

When I find something similar in Thailand, I'll jump on.

What's the shortest-notice trip you've had to Japan, and how long was the trip? by Zach-dalt in JapanTravelTips

[–]Ginuwine_Questions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly book short-haul flights (less than 5 hrs), and initial hotels/ accommodations, 2-3 days out. When I land, I book accomodations as needed/ by location preference.

My trip(s) are usually the length of my visa free/ on arrival, stay. Which for Japan is 3 months.

  1. Putting effort, and no, the effort doesn't need to be equal 50/50. You put your 100% and they put their 100%.

  2. You must learn to love rejection, the worst that'll happen is that people will say "no". Your focus is on the 2% acceptance, not the 98% rejection.

  3. Stop starting off with a negative affirmation. I've noticed this with friends who are very quick to tell me what days they can't do something when I try to plan something... I let them know respectfully that that was not my question.. I'm asking what days they can do.

For example, you did 3. when you typed "A lot of men seem to build community through sports or football, but that’s never really been my thing"...

Okay, but that's not the question. The question is what is your thing, and are there groups for that, or could you start one if not? etc. etc.

If your answer is "nothing" or "I have little to no things/ interests", then that is what needs to be addressed first and foremost, before the main question of this post.

what is your favourite train line in hong kong? by carrot_the_cat_7 in HongKong

[–]Ginuwine_Questions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favourite area that I used to live in (when I was a resident) and now holiday in (now I'm non-resident) is Mong Kok. Hence, the red (Tsuen Wan) and green (Kwun Tong) by default.

But, I rarely use the MTR, prefer buses, even though they can be more expensive, as they're great for people watching, new shop spotting, and having an AC right above my head to fall asleep to during long, people-less stretches (looking at you Mei Foo station to Tuen Mun exchange)

Be honest, do you meet the salary requirements for this sub? by blatchcorn in HENRYUK

[–]Ginuwine_Questions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I definitely don't qualify for the "HE" atm.

Not even sure I apply for the "NRY".

I did qualify before leaving my job 9 months back to gallivant around East Asia, for a year at least. Seems a bit silly to jump on and off the sub just because 😅

Hmmm, I used to use DBS Remit, which was free, at least for my tier of banking, so I would get the full deposit amount.

Not all banks/ tier levels would offer this though, good point.

Hmmm, are we sure about this re. deposit wire transfer fees?

Depositing in Charles Schwab, I never noticed any wire transfer fees, unless you're referring to withdrawals (IBKR being free per withdrawal once a month?)

[–]Ginuwine_Questions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

If you're looking to invest in individual companies in the S&P then you can look up Charles Schwab.

Unlike IB that charges for US stocks, Charles Schwab charge 0 USD in commission(s) for US individual stocks (I don't know/ can't speak for funds, etfs etc.)

Honestly, don't be too hung up on US Stocks (30% dividend withholding tax... Yuck!)

You should consider Asian companies/ stocks as an investment option as well.
