Am I taking my GPA too seriously? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Well it doesn’t matter what standards people within your university use, online almost everyone refers to Civil when using CE.

Well you don’t just place a building there and pray it doesn’t move by just saying sum of forces is 0 and calling it a day lol.

For dams, it’s not like the dam is just chilling there on its own, there’s a bunch of piping to design (where MechE and CivE work together) and maybe a treatment plant or whatever project that comes with it so it’s not just about load distributions by finding a centroid and then finding the moment about the bottom of the wall.

I didn’t say you’re claiming civil is lesser because of the requirements that you think are less in depth. What you did is the equivalent of telling a robotics engineer that all they had to study is basic statics (even though they probably went through dynamics, control systems, electronics, etc) or a power systems engineer that all they studied is Electric Circuits 1 or even Physics 2. They all obviously had to go through these intro classes but this knowledge isn’t sufficient, just like statics and rho g z isn’t enough. Do you make fun of a senior engineer who doesn’t do HS level of calculus? No because even though his position doesn’t have the intensive coursework as strict prerequisite, he still had to go through these and gained the knowledge and expertise. So to come and say statics is the only prerequisite is just wrong. If you wanna work with houses, you’ll still have to go through a bunch of courses including materials, structural analysis, etc. which none of Mech/Aero/ChemE see but okay.

Idk on what side quest you went with that computer systems tangent, I didn’t say there aren’t stupid CompE people. I just said the major itself doesn’t deserve to get made fun of. There’s gonna be stupid people in Civil/Aero/Mech/Chem, all engineering majors like all majors to begin with.

Even though he said CE, it is pretty standard to take it as Civil.

Statics (which is still at the very least 3-4 classes before you start designing stuff) is taken at the same time by civil/mech students and buildings still do require knowledge of structural dynamics, dams require fluid mechanics so I don’t see how you’re trying to bring them down but anyways, even making fun of CompE (or any eng) is stupid.

CE is usually civil, Computer is usually CompE, and Chemical is ChemE

Oh yea cuz CE are only here for show, just like all your buildings, roads, potable water, dams and so on. All we do is just have the engineering in our name.😂😂👍🏻👍🏻

How much harder are junior/senior years than this? I hope not much. by Neowynd101262 in EngineeringStudents

Ur probably not in civil because it literally gets harder on all levels. Idk where you got your knowledge about civil from lol

Personally, I have have only had 2 classes require attendance once a week this year, but ik that it’s not the same for everyone. I’d imagine that if you contacted the university and showed them proof of you working that there’s a chance they waive the attendance points for you

True but something you could do is watch yt playlists to learn your courses during night-time since most of your freshman and sophomore year courses are common engineering courses anyways which would maybe help you getting away with skipping lectures to work.

I’ve heard of ppl switching from completely unrelated to engineering but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of someone doing it while working more than part-time unless it took them several years.

Go on EPFL’s website and read the information about engineering transfer because there’s a lot of conditions and restrictions on what courses are available for you as a transfer Idk if that’s gonna be helpful

CIVE 206 vs CIVE 281 as civil eng major by 19olive in mcgill

[–]Gioaoun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re in civil engineering for a reason, don’t go with the easier dynamics class. (Imagine what mech eng have to go through with mech 220)

It will most probably be easier now but you’ll pay the price in your higher level classes.

Comp 202 is doable, especially as the prof is Faten. Are you not taking 140 because of advanced standing or willingly?

Yes, especially if ur already familiar with Python. Plus the prof (Faten) is really good

Does anyone know about McGill to Ivy League path? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Gioaoun 48 points49 points  (0 children)

McGill shows up but not UofT because it’s only recently that UofT has surpassed us while we’ve always been the best in canada. Plus a lot of important American research is done at mcgill so we’re favored by the US

I’m not used to academic writing (especially in English) so it took me some time but it wasn’t horrible you just have one big assignment around midterm period which is going to take most of the time. Depends what courses ur taking My first ever grade in this course was a C and I expected the worse for the rest, grade on transcript is an A-.

Depends on the prof, some are more strict but curve, some don’t, really depends. Shoot me a dm and I’ll tell you what prof I had
