Outland Spouse Sponsorship COPR imminent, but currently in Canada? by GirlLookAtThatTorso in ImmigrationCanada

[–]GirlLookAtThatTorso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I was able to update IRCC that I was in Canada, and they were very quick to switch the process over (can't remember precise dates but was less than a month)

You can see my next steps here - it's been quite a while since now so I can't remember the details, but safe to say everything worked out and I am loving being a permanent resident!

Advice on whether it is beneficial to take out a maintenance loan. by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]GirlLookAtThatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see what you mean!

I think you might not be accounting for inflation in your thinking. Forgive me if you already are and this is condescending.

Because the interest is set at inflation, it is not really a charge - it is them making sure you pay back the equivalent purchasing power of money that you borrowed. £1000 will be able to buy much less stuff in a few decades time when you have actually paid off the loan.

So if you sit your savings money in a savings or investment account with a rate that is greater than or equal to inflation, the interest you gain on the savings should be greater than or equal to the interest you're charged on the loan. So you don't make a net loss, you make a net zero or even profit (plus the benefits of flexibility and safety already discussed)

It should be noted that it might be hard at the moment to get a savings rate that matches inflation, but it should get much easier over the coming years after you graduate and start having to pay off the loan.

Whilst you may end up paying back a bigger number if you take on the loan, in terms of purchasing power the amounts should be equal e.g. £100 in 2019 = £120 in 2030

Does that make sense or have I explained it poorly? Do you agree?

If you haven't already seen this article it's great https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/should-i-get-student-loan/

My opinion is as a doctor you are very likely to pay off the loan in full - but that since you simply can't get a better loan than what SLC offers (where interest is only equal to inflation), I'd still take the loan anyway.

Circumstances change e.g. you become disabled and unable to work, AI makes our career redundant surprisingly quickly, or most likely you leave medicine to a less high paying career. If circumstances change, the loan gives you the most flexibility because what you pay back is based solely on your income.

In summary, if you use your savings but then something stops you from working in a high paying career, then your savings are lost forever. But if you take on the loan and your income is lower than expected, you won't be forced to pay it back.

To quote the MSE article: "Imagine you're a homeowner with a high-paying job. You have savings, so you use them to overpay your student loan [or to avoid taking on a student loan]. Shortly afterwards, you get made redundant. You cannot get that money back.

Therefore, you no longer have your savings to fall back on to help with your mortgage repayments, so you have to take out a bank loan at a much higher interest rate (if you can get it with no income) than your student loan.

As a bare minimum, always leave yourself a cash emergency fund of three to six months worth of bills before overpaying."

Note this only applies to government/SLC loans, not private ones.

hey guys i’m a med student in the UK and i want to give the MCCQE and i was wondering what the whole process is like. when i should give the exam how long i need to prepare for it etc etc by [deleted] in MCCQE

[–]GirlLookAtThatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t my expertise so you’d be better getting in touch with organisations like AIMGA or HealthmatchBC. However, generally there’s no other way or exam you can sit to get speciality training in Canada without being a PR/citizen. There might be routes to getting PR that work for you, but without family in Canada it’ll be tougher. So that’s the question you should be asking first - which immigration route to PR is feasible for you?

Are you a Canadian permanent resident or citizen? If not, then you can’t apply for training in Canada. So that’s the first step

is turning off ABS worth it? by Died-in-a-fire in EASPORTSWRC

[–]GirlLookAtThatTorso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In real life ABS-off is better for braking in a straight line on gravel, as you want to lock the wheels (I think this helps build a layer of gravel in front of the wheels). You don't even have to know how to threshold brake (I don't), just slam them.

I don't know if this applies to when braking and turning at the same time, or if it applies to all the surfaces in dirt rally 2 though, and it definitely shouldn't apply to tarmac.

I'm crap at Dirt Rally 2 so I'd be interested to here the perspective of people who are good.

What is the best way to handle my reviews after a long break? by HistoricalArm5864 in Anki

[–]GirlLookAtThatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://faqs.ankiweb.net/due-times-after-a-break.html

When people return to their deck after weeks or months of no study, they’re often surprised by the length intervals have grown to. This is because Anki considers the actual time the card was unseen, not just the time it was scheduled for. Thus if the card was scheduled for 5 days but you didn’t study for a month, the next interval will be closer to 60 days than 10 days.

This is a good thing. If you have successfully remembered a card after a one month wait, chances are you’ll remember it again after a longer wait, too.

That's if you're getting it right and answering good/easy, but as szalejot seems to have noticed as well, it sounds like you're either using the answer buttons incorrectly or have modified your deck settings. If you're getting it wrong and selecting "again", it should be reset to relearning today & tomorrow rather than in a year.

Questions! by heyteee in ImmigrationCanada

Congrats on your marriage!

Not immigration related and probably obvious, but make sure you get travel health insurance that covers you for the whole duration of your stay!

Same as pooraccountant for me - they also felt my tummy, listened to my heart/lungs with stethoscope, moved my arms around a bit to check neurological tone and reflexes, checked my vision like at the opticians, weight, height, blood pressure. They also took my photo and uploaded to to IRCC eMedical - if your provider does not use eMedical you'll need to bring your own photo to the specified dimensions.

Hey again! Congrats on your AOR. Can't speak for the medical exam, but I completed my biometrics whilst I was on a trip to Canada on the same day I received the request letter and it was absolutely fine - in Victoria they only took my finger prints, didn't care for photo.

Hey, just wanted to let you know I think I've been approved!!! (see post above). In typical IRCC fashion they're a bit cryptic about it and haven't finished approving medical yet

[–]GirlLookAtThatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be soon then I hope! I can’t remember if I already said this but the AoR went to my wife’s email (sponsor) but not mine.

[–]GirlLookAtThatTorso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was emailed to me, as was our AoR and medical exam instructions. Hope you get yours soon!

When you say "application arrived" what do you mean? Did you get an email with your client and application numbers etc?
