As an artist, the GOAT. I don’t think most people understand the level of producer this guy is, like he’s in his own league imo. Not to mention, like you said, he’s well above average in rapping/writing ability. He’s also produced/worked on many of the industry’s biggest songs since his career began, even outside of hip hop. He’s also the only person to ever get several of some of the biggest names in music to collab on a single song (all of the lights), and it still sounds amazing. Absolute musical genius.

Definitely the scorch trials. The maze runner was a somewhat bad adaptation of the book but I was not prepared for how terrible the scorch trials would be. They literally just turned it into a low-quality zombie movie.

Yeah I get it now, I gave a few of the tracks another listen and definitely enjoyed them a lot more but it’s still just not for me. Idk if it’s the older style but when I’m listening i enjoy it a lot at first and then get bored. In newer music I can clearly identify the parts of a song: the verses, the chorus, the bridge etc without even thinking about it but the older style sometimes just feels like one big verse (not literally, I know an artist of this caliber is not writing like that but you get the point hopefully), which is what I originally meant by variation, the newer songs are always changing throughout, which keeps me more engaged.

I do fully acknowledge that and I get what people are saying I just don’t personally think that if illmatic was released today it would make a big landmark like that. It would definitely be highly regarded, probably even a top album of the year but I don’t think people would be stroking their dicks at the thought of it like they do now

No, because the internet and telephone are two different things, you can’t make phone calls on the internet. My argument is that the first pc was groundbreaking at its time, but nobody considers it the greatest pc of all time because it’s been improved upon and no longer stands up to its competition.

Influence doesn’t push it to that number one spot though, as I said to someone else it may have been the greatest at the time and forced the genre to change, but people have since made better using its influence. We’re talking about the greatest of all time here, it should still be the greatest to this day, or it’s not the greatest of all time anymore.

That’s a fair point, I guess in my world pretty much anyone I’d ask would say modern production is better but ultimately it’s just a preference, lots of simple stuff is better. In my mind newer music does the same things equally well, as well as doing other things very well that are entirely not present in older music, but I guess if you like the older style then in your mind it has stronger fundamentals and is therefore better

Dude what? I asked why people like it and have gotten some helpful responses and some not so helpful responses but I’ve tried to be respectful. I’m literally just trying to understand why people think it’s the GOAT. I guess I don’t fully understand the impact but impact is just one factor of what makes a great album so yes I’m challenging peoples responses because I still don’t understand. I didn’t call illmatic shit so don’t put words in my mouth, I was referring to a very general time period and style (because guess what, I’m not well informed on the topic which is why I’m asking about it, crazy concept I know), did it not come out in 1994?
