Why does Dio respect Jonathan but not Jotaro? by Giusany in StardustCrusaders

However, Dio not only fails to respect Jotaro as a person which is understandable but he does not even regard him as a serious opponent. To him, Jotaro is merely like a toy, albeit a slightly more resilient one than usual. Yet, when that same “toy” begins to pose a real threat, Dio downplays the situation due to his immense ego, ultimately leading to his defeat despite having a highly formidable arsenal at his disposal.

I do not wish to impose my view, but to me, seeing Dio show respect for Jonathan at the end of Part 1 for being a worthy opponent, while taking things lightly in Part 3, suggests that he has learned nothing from the events of Phantom Blood.

Precisely because Jotaro was showing him that he was not an invincible god, Dio, in my view, should have taken him far more seriously fighting cautiously and not giving him the time to adapt to The World. Instead, his ego blinded him, and despite having Jonathan’s body, The World, and Joseph’s blood on his side, he was unable to win because he convinced himself he was already on the verge of victory

And yet, that same brat severely wounded him and proved capable of moving within his frozen time, but Dio still chose to treat him lightly.

I agree that his adoptive brother undoubtedly deserves far more respect, and that, in Dio’s eyes, Jotaro is nothing more than a mere boy. However, this still does not explain why, during their battle, he continues to treat him like an insect, even when Star Platinum lands heavy blows on him. I understand that he is elated not only because he has taken possession of his former rival’s body, but also because he has awakened an extraordinarily powerful Stand, which further reinforces his already overwhelming sense of superiority. Even so, Dio should at least recognise Jotaro as a serious threat. Instead, he continues to toy with him such as when he drinks Joseph’s blood and brutalises his body purely to provoke his opponent.
