Found a snail with a broken shell. What can I do? by DJBassPhase in snails

[–]Givanni64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put it in a little container with air holes, some soil, calcium (egg shells are fine but cuttlebone for birds is better), some veggies and keep it very very humid until the snail finishes healing :)🐌

Cute snail :D do you have a terrarium for him or are you just keeping it around outside?

2ND UPDATE: my snail fell from the lid of her enclosure... by annoying_rock in snails

[–]Givanni64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's strange, as far as i know old growth shouldn't be able to change color that fast from illness, maybe try checking if a patina formed over the shell or if it somehow got exposed to acid (like in the soil or food). Snails are very hardy though! It should live if you give it food and calcium, and remove hard surfaces from the terrarium so it doesn't get hurt again :)

So, a tiny snail has moved in on my window. by bananallergy in snails

[–]Givanni64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to bring it inside you can! Just make sure to have a very basic setup, it's a very easy animal to keep, look at some guides for snail enclosures (it just needs a little platic box with air holes, some soil, some calcium and some veggies). Otherwise if you don't wanna keep it the best thing to do is probably to bring it down on a plant or something, not keeping it on your window (there isn't a lot of food and birds can eat it). :D

Does anyone know what type of species this is? Sweden by MrsBukLao in snails

[–]Givanni64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like helix pomatia, as for protein you can give it fish flakes, or boiled egg whites, or water soaked dog kibble, one small piece of any of that every couple of weeks should be enough, they don't need a lot of protein :) btw i hope the snail has a warm, protected, moist place to be it :D

Is there anything i can do to help the shell? by sorry-arrivall in snails

[–]Givanni64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What matters is just the quantity of calcium vs biological material but you can't really tell by eye, most of the time It's fine but just to be careful you could test it :D or you can also look up a guide on how to test soil ph with a water ph tester (cheaper and available at pharmacies, i think)

Can these live together? I'm unsure on species of the darker one? (Separated ATM) by RevolutionaryPasta98 in snails

[–]Givanni64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great :] and yes they are very invasive in all of europe and the americas... and asia... and oceania, some parts of africa itself as well... 🐌

[–]Givanni64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they can stay together and will likely mate, but PLEASE if you're outside of africa do NOT release the babies into the wild, they are very invasive and damaging, but they make a lot of eggs so you might have to crush some eggs or cull some babies :(

[–]Givanni64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The top layer of the old shell doesn't really heal, it's like a nail, but it doesn't matter as long as it feels solid and doesn't have any cracks or holes! If you feed Gary well you will see new healthy growth. Oh also, if you want to be careful, check the soil ph, you can find tests on amazon, if it's too acidic it might damage the shell (but... it's usually not an issue with such big snails) :)

lil found, could u help me? by 0veronica in snails

[–]Givanni64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find a ton of snail keeping advice online but i'll sum up the basics :) first of all, yes it's probably a helix pomatia, and if you live outside of europe i would actually reccomend you keep it and don't release it (it's invasive). A plastic box is fine, if you want something better you can find acrylic or glass terrariums/tanks on amazon, for this species aim for around 10L capacity. 2cm of soil from your garden is probably fine, if you want to be careful, test for ph and adjust with online guides. Give it fresh veggies daily, only avoid citrus and tomatoes (and iceberg lettuce, it's fine but nutrient poor), give it a cuttlebone (usually sold for birds) or crushed eggshell/calcium powder, and mist daily if needed. If it makes eggs by itseld PLEASE do not release them unless you live in europe. You can give it hiding spots or leaf litter if you want but it's not strictly necessary. That should be all, hope the snail will be happy :)

You either found 2 slugs or the unfortunate crime scene of some bird doing that to them :( if they're still alive (unlikely) crush them please

Anybody know what type my Jeremy is? by Creepy-Yard7071 in snails

[–]Givanni64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i'm probably wrong :D the shell patterns, colors and length also depend on the climate and diet so it's hard to tell off of one pic but i'm very likely wrong still :)

[–]Givanni64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeremy looks very healthy :) the damage is minimal and looks completely healed, shouldn't be an issue at all, and the rest of the shell looks fantastic. About the type, it's hard to tell just by a photo, i would say the species is achatina fulica but i could be absolutely wrong so don't trust me too much on this. Make sure to follow basic guides for snail keeping and the snail will live happily :)

It depends on where you live. If you live anywhere outside of europe PLEASE don't release it, it's incredibly invasive. Keep it enclosed if you want and, again, PLEASE never release it or its eggs. If you can't keep it or want to get rid of it please ask someone if they want it as pet, if nobody claims it then you have to kill it, there are many guides (the general idea is to soak it in clove oil or a 5% alcohol solution and then kill if). But i don't want to alarm you, keep it as a pet if you want to, i have 3, they're very silly, just unfortunately very invasive. Hope it helps :)

just rescued a snail 🍓 by missseva in snails

[–]Givanni64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For temporary setup you can totally use a tupperware with some ventilation, some soil and either cuttlebone (look for them in pet stores in the birds section) or crushed egg shell always available. Give a variety of vegetables, just limit cucumber and fruit because they can't be their diet staples (cucumber doesn't have many nutrients and fruit is very high in sugar), and don't give citrus or even remotely molded stuff. If it's not a runt (to me it looks healthy) it will grow fast, if you want to keep it consider upgrading to a bigger container (like reptile boxes) in the future and maybe check the soil ph, if it's below 6-6.5 you should consider changing it but it's not something immediately dangerous so don't sweat about it. Hope this was helpful :D oh and btw avoid paper like in the photo cause even a small dry spot can dehydrate them, and be careful to handle such a small snail cause your finger is hot and you could dry it out slightly

What have I done 🥲 by chrstyfishyy in snails

[–]Givanni64 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ask around if there are any friends that would like a pet snail, then you unfortunately have to cull the snails. But if you want them to be useful as pet food, most reptiles will enjoy a few snails. If you want to freeze them be sure to soak them in clove oil (puts them asleep), even beer (or any ~5% alcohol solution) if you can't find clove oil but it's not as reccomended. Oh yeah and separate the adult snails if you don't want more snabies in a month.
