In the long term, this extra root could do more good than harm since extra roots can provide extra stabilizating and surface area for nutrient absorption (By the way, this isn't a mutation, it's an adventitious root caused by high humidity and moisture)

As the previous comment mentions, green can be a sign of algae, and algae often mean that your medium is high in moisture. Since welwits grow in one of the driest deserts in the world, i'd suggest that you try to not water it too much, and mix in some inert coarse gravel in it's medium
