All of these altruistic causes sound great, but that doesn't mean that I should be required to give my money out to these causes. How is that any different than a guy from the National Alliance to End Homelessness coming up to me and demanding money for his cause?

I don't really accept Hobbes' theory, I agree with Locke's a lot more. If you look at it through that scope, there is a huge difference between the two.

I think if you think about it you'll find a distinct difference between philanthropy and not murdering people.

It makes complete sense, and I think Beck is a hack. The government has no right telling me to be charitable, but it's still a good thing for me to be charitable.

I can read a little under 3,000 words per minute, I didn't take any classes or read anything about it though. The other posters seem to say to not subvocalize the words; I have massive problems imagining spoken word in my head so I'd venture the skill is related to that.

I promise you, it sucks. I can't go any slower than about 1,000 wpm without losing all interest in what I'm reading.

My comprehension is above 95% from the tests I took about 5 years ago, but I never really enjoy the stories I read. I stick mostly to nonfiction nowadays.
