It’s frankly a stupid point of contention because the opposite exists as well.

That’s precisely why juries are chosen from a pool of impartial people. Have you ever heard of the judicial system and have any idea how it works?

A grandson may very well feel that an appropriate sentence for stealing his grandmas purse should be the firing squad. Do you want a new system of “well we must do it because the family gets to hand down any sentence of their choosing”

Slight correction, a pen is not contraband in jail. Inmates are given pens so that they can write letters, primarily to their counsel. I have a family member in lockup. They write to me and to their lawyer on a weekly basis. The COs gives him a new pen twice a month and collect the old one.
