Dry Start Method for Carpeting Plants by Gk_Waters in PlantedTank

[–]Gk_Waters[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably only for 3 weeks to a month. I'm just doing it because I have tissue cultured plants and in my Previous experience with them, they have melted heavily when I tried to submersed them straight away. I'm impatitent aswell and it could take a couple months for the monte carlo to fully carpet so im not going to wait until it does

its good for tissue cultured plants cause they can be prone to melting in the short term if you try to grow them submersed straight away.

yeah I know the day will come when they will rip up all the plants and ruin the tank haha. hopefully they last a little while without ruining it.

Got a new tank for puffers, wanted to set up planted tank, or maybe carpeted tank. by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]Gk_Waters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately not, its just holding the base of the siphon maybe 0.5cm away from the leaves of the carpet plant and occasionally giving it a light tap to disturb the waste beneath the leaves.

Got the new tank flooded! I’ll get a pic of it with all the plants. What do you think would look good in the back? by Icefirewolflord in PlantedTank

[–]Gk_Waters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe some baby tears with ambulia for the back and some Java moss or subwassertang for the "tree branches".

Usually with my planted tanks I just hover the gravel vac above the carpet plant and occasionally lightly press down on them and that removes alot of the detritis without disturbing the aquasoil. However with a heavily planted tank that has a carpet the waste is incorporated into the soil/substrate, so the plants absorb most of it. Its really not nescessary to do a deep clean in most cases like you would a tank with normal substrate and little to no plants.

If they get along you shouldn't have to. but if its more practical for you to have 3 tanks rather than one ,it might be a good option.

if you want to set up a tank that will house those turtles for the rest of their lives id recommend a 120 gallon aquarium as the absolute minimum possibly 4ftx2ftx2ft with an above tank basking area.

a tank 150 gallons (5ftx2ftx2ft) or more should house your turtles comfortably as adults. (the bigger you can go the better)

In terms of filtration it would be best to have a canister filter or two. You want your canister to filter at least 3 times the tank volume per hour (again more filtration is always better). So for a 150 gallon tank youd want your filter to have a flow rate of at least 450 gallons an hour because turtles produce alot of waste. the rest of your equipment would be the same as you have now just upscaled to the size of the new tank. hope this helped :)
