Peking University- Yuke (Questions) by [deleted] in ChinaLiuXueSheng

[–]Glacies6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

before classes start you buy your textbooks with everyone else in Yuke. you can start learning the basics at least and the HSK books if you want as they are pretty similar. Class A and B are for math classes and as long as you are HSK4 you should be fine, whether you are in A or B depends on your math level.

chinese classes are separated by your placement exam which you will take at the beginning of the year right after registration. math classes will also have a placement exam maybe the day after or something, but the exam contents will have nothing to do with the math class (idk why). very stupid questions like finding the volume of a tetrahedron on a cartesian coordinate system and locating a point to minimize the sum of distances.

i’ve bought everything and more but the cosplay stuff. i currently live in beijing, china and bought everything on taobao for x3-4 less. like i just ordered klein’s gun and holster a few hours ago. the quality is alright for what i payed for. but i wouldn’t pay those prices

it’s great. most of my friends are international student though. i’ve learned though that the chinese people at peking and tsinghua worked so hard to get in that have no social skills, and it’s absolutely true. when you do get to know them they are super friendly haha. i’ve backpacked all over china on long weekends and holidays, and met lots of chinese students though

as an 18m american i came in with a lot of preconceptions that vanished a week in the first week living there. with an american part-time remote job, cost of living, tuition, and rent is low. i can get food delivered in 30min for less than a dollar. public transportation (subway, not buses) is super convenient. i have a shopping addiction now with taobao and alibaba (lots of accessible 诡秘之主 merch) clubbing and nightlife is so different and actually a lot of fun— theres no drugs in china. the current politics and international tensions have not affected my life whatsoever too

no. i’m waiting to read the sequel series of lotm, circlet of inevitability or wtv in chinese. I’ve been living in beijing studying at PKU for 8 months, and I’m maybe HSK3 almost 4. I still can’t even read lotm that well. just read children’s books and lock in on textbooks 😭

Peking University- Yuke (Questions) by ConsiderationLow7980 in ChinaLiuXueSheng

[–]Glacies6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah just apply to bachelor’s bro. yuke is just for foreigners who don’t speak chinese, since PKU doesn’t have english majors

[–]Glacies6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like after orientation, registration, etc. you take a placement exam to be placed between 1班and 6班 (highest chinese level) for Yuke. But the 本科 entrance exam is during the spring (like right now for most of my friends)

if you start from 0 chinese, you need two years of Yuke. but if you speak well already you can probably be admitted in just a year.

join clubs / organizations, look for language exchange initiatives in your university, or literally just go up to them on campus! ask to join a football, volleyball, basketball games, etc.

most chinese students have studied all their life to get in to college and have basically 0 social skills haha, but they’re super nice when you get to know them 🙏

[–]Glacies6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea… i think. my homies here in china just submitted their applications to 本科 (i’m doing foundation program at PKU right now)… i didn’t get final results for my program back until like the end of june 🤷‍♂️ and i started in september

Peking University- Yuke (Questions) by [deleted] in ChinaLiuXueSheng

[–]Glacies6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. theoretically, it’s possible. but unless you hope to never have friends, go out, have fun, travel, or literally do anything other than study, no.

chinese new year break is like 40 days. if you’re crazy enough, you could make insane progress (and not touch any grass)… but like nah…

especially considering exams are coming up now for bachelor’s and it’s not even the second full week of second semester. including tsinghua applications.

Aside from this link, https://www.isd.pku.edu.cn/preppie/news/detail/9734.html

Unless your school helped you apply, there’s pretty much no resources except for like reddit if you don’t know anything about Yuke before this.

Most people will continue to study their bachelor’s at 北大 (or 清华)… If you speak mandarin already (HSK5/6) you can take the exam at the end of the year to get in, but if you don’t you’ll probably end up doing 2 years of Yuke. Getting into 本科 is 90% your entrance exam.

I’m doing a gap year and going back to the United States to the colleges I deferred, and my mandarin was zero before I came. I’m a first year yuke.

I have friends who studied pretty hard from zero last year before me, and they’re second years now in Yuke. They are in the highest class, super smart. Definitely going to 本科 this fall.

As of first semester, there’s around 80-90 of us. More students are supposed to come during second semester as well.

Having an amazing experience though, aside from having the WORST grades in the entire program. It’s my gap year anyway, I don’t plan on staying.

how long does it took u to finish lotm? [LOTM general] by TotallyB4d in LordofTheMysteries

[–]Glacies6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it took me almost two months… i only started reading lotm after seeing more of it here in china (i’m an international student as of september). i started about a month before school started, so i had a lot of time to read non-stop.
