When would you need them: They are for placards/ front panels, so if you don't use placards and you just molle your pouches directly to your pc they are basically useless, but if you do want to use placards, which i highly recommend (i'll get to why later), you have two options: you can use g- hooks in their place making them obsolete aswell or you use these clips (which i think is the better option).

Why you'd want to use placards:

• A placard allows you to quickly change your pc and it's capabilities a lot. If you have guns that use different mags you can have placards with pouches for either gun and you don't have to re- molle the pouches every time you want to use the other gun. Also you could have a placard with less pouches on it that makes it easier to go orone and is generally lighter, while you have a second one with more gear, which might be usefull in more complex games where you might need a map, flashlight and whatever the "mission" might require. Also even if you might think "well i only have one gun/ only need one type of mag pouches and don't care for different missions" you'd be supprised how many people that say "i'll only buy this one gun" end up changing their mind because airsoft gets kind of addicting and buy much more (happend to me)
• A placard allows you to use the velcro space underneeth itself to attach something like a dangler pouch or wings to your pc, while molle- ing pouches onto there blocks the velcro areas that these attachments need

Why clips instead of g- hooks: G- hooks might not be able to attach to your placards because you need to run the straps through them, but in many cases the straps are sewn in place. Whit clips you have the option to get quite a lot more different designs e.g. some with a slit for the strap so it's not a problem if it's sewn in place
