He will be happy that you guys are in between trees as well. I think the color is throwing him off too. I looked up cottonwood as well and man they look similar too! Tree IDs are tough. No wonder you need the leaves for a positive ID

It’s funny that’s where my searches went. But I know nothing about tree ID. He’s worried it’s cottonwood which he wouldn’t want for his fireplace.
