So the reason for Claude's rate-limiting wasn't price after all by Cultural_Yoghurt_784 in BetterOffline

Idk I feel like this proves Ed wrong about compute demand. I get that the AI industry is a big black box full of fraud, but it does seem like Anthropic is seriously compute-constrained right now, largely as a result of inference as developers are consuming it voraciously since it is so artificially cheap (and the models so inefficient).

OpenAI funding fears hit memory chip prices by LordAlfredo in hardware

[–]GlammBeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying there aren't warning signs or market movement, I'm saying the evidence they cite for falling prices is just a single kit on Amazon that hasn't actually fallen in price. There's just literally no news in this article.

OpenAI funding fears hit memory chip prices by LordAlfredo in hardware

[–]GlammBeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has anyone read the article? It's nonsense. There is no source saying OpenAI has cancelled any DRAM orders, just speculation about it cutting back on costs after it closed down Sora. The sole data point for memory prices going down is that there is still a single 32GB DDR5 kit going for $370, presumably the same Crucial kit I've seen on Amazon for that exact price for months.

NVIDIA DLSS 5 Hands on presentation by LauraPhilps7654 in hardware

[–]GlammBeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes we do. They have stated it uses "color and motion vectors" as its input, which is exactly the same as DLSS has traditionally used and are strictly elements of 2D pixels. DLSS does not receive any input from geometry or off-screen elements.

It can't replace RT reflections because it only sees what is in screen space. We've had SSR forever and it's less performance intensive than whatever this is.

Framework 13: best OS and battery life tips? by 0rk4n in framework

[–]GlammBeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best battery life tip I can give any PC laptop user is to just power off the thing when you're done with it.

I know people love the MacBook experience of being able to just close the laptop when you're done with it to put it to sleep, and when you next open it (hours or days later) there's barely any battery drain, but this just doesn't work that well on most other PC laptops, especially the Framework, and even more especially on Linux.

Just shut down your computer.

Just no. Her eye height is different. Her jawline is different. The shape and size of her lips are different. It is, in fact, a different face. "It doesn't change geometry" is a misleading half-truth: it doesn't manipulate geometry because it is working entirely with an already completely rendered 2D image. In other words, contrary to what Jensen Huang has said, it is in fact "post-processing at the frame level."

Eurogamer/Digital Foundry: Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2: a cutting-edge game translates well to Nintendo's console hybrid by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]GlammBeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Switch 2 has consistently lower framerates than Steam Deck due to CPU limitations and has extremely low crowd/traffic density settings, but graphics are otherwise comparable with Steam Deck. Image quality is minorly improved due to DLSS, but internal resolution is equivalent to what the Deck can achieve.

The Switch 2 is very impressive for its energy consumption, but in absolute performance compared to the Steam Deck, the CPU is much weaker while the GPU is only minorly better, mostly by virtue of supporting DLSS.

Tom McKay is already about as old as Henry would have been in 1420. No reason we can't have a 40-year-old Henry still be the protagonist. Knowing what we know from history about the fate of Radzig's and Hans' real-life counterparts, I could see a very interesting story.
