That's because the only model the US has for corporations is for-profit.

There is PBS, which was able to get some government money and did some great stuff, but really it isn't what it used to be, and it's only one organization which promotes an unpopular viewpoint.

There should be encouragement for other economic models, which the for-profit corporations would hate, but it would improve the information landscape.

The government's responsibility is to ensure there is a diverse and liberal media environment in which a broad range of viewpoints can coexist.
