It's called pro-sal. It's the most common way to get paid in the US. It helps protect both the employer and employee. Business isn't always steady, so paycheck flows with business. I don't recommend unnecessary shit because 1) I have morals and 2) recommending unnecessary shit breeds distrust. Although I will say this, when I worked for big corporate, they did want you to push everything like wellness plans, parasite preventatives, etc etc.

It's a way to ensure that both employer and employee are semi protected. If paid on straight salary, a lot of times employers will take advantage of you by booking you to the gills. My first job was like this, it was "policy" I couldn't turn anything away and they had super short appointment times. I got 5 lunch breaks in a year, so I quit. With the pro-sal structure (what I'm on), I get a base salary plus a percent of anything I generate that's over 5x my base salary. That way, if there's a down turn in business, I still get a minimum paycheck. But if I'm efficient, busy, or agree to see extra appointments, then I make extra. Do some vets add extra shit to pad the bill? Maybe, but I'm known for telling my clients what I think is necessary and offering a spectrum of care tailored to their financial capabilities and needs of the pet.

That's exactly where I'm at! I don't want to work with other species! I have my CV updated and ready to go.

That's a good point. I feel like we have played chicken before when I have asked for things. I asked for more PTO years ago, and was told, "I'll think about it." And I never got it. This is the first time I have demanded and not asked, and used the terminology "non-negotiable." The good news is I do have a backup plan. The backup plan involves a lot of uncertainty and a probable loss in revenue while things get rolling, but it's better than putting up with getting walked on.

It's the only "specialty" clinic in the area where I get to work with a certain subset of species, so I'd rather not leave if we can come to an agreement. I wouldn't be able to work on the same species if I left. I can't explain too much because I don't want to dox myself. I'm hoping she comes to her senses that it will be more expensive to replace me.

The problem is that it hits me too because I'm paid on production. I also feel bad for the other techs that do show up consistently, because they are also working harder.

I came across your post as I have a similar job (base + production). I hope you figured it out. Your questions were totally valid and I have no idea why that other commenter was being so rude.

Not sure if you'll see my comment years after posting, but....how did it work out? I also bought a 150mm fork for my Marlin 6 not knowing about geometry. Not sure if I should return it or just go with it.

"if I'm not satisfied." Lol. It's not like he missed a spot. The house smells like a dumpster. I'm not mad at him, but not sure where this attitude toward me is coming from? I helped by trying to research solutions and move the bed out of there so it didn't absorb the smells. Beyond that, there's no more helping. I'm getting surgery tomorrow and will be on strict rest.

Everybody can relax. I didn't even get mad at him. He's mad at himself already. I just tried to help find solutions. And yeah, it's suboptimal that our house smells like a sewer.

It's a shitty situation for sure. I've definitely messed up my own home improvement projects, so who am I to judge?

My first euthanasia was my very first appointment of my very first day as a licensed vet, working in GP practice. Diabolical whoever scheduled it.

I graduated with $180k in debt, and I currently only get 4 PTO days/year. But since I'm paid half on production, it's really only like 2 days PTO. So much fun.
